Runes in Bloodborne act a lot like rings do in the Dark Souls series. Players can equip up to four runes at a time, with all four slots being available right when you're able to equip runes.

While players will start finding runes early into the game, they can't be equipped until the Rune Workshop Tool has been obtained. The Rune Workshop Tools is dropped by The Witch Of Hemwick, an optional boss that many players may completely miss during a playthrough; here's where to find the boss and how to equip runes.

If a player is pursuing a nimble and mobility-friendly Skill build in Bloodborne, these are the best weapons to use.

Where To Find The Witch Of Hemwick

The Witch Of Hemwick is found in Hemwick Charnel Lane, which is an optional area players can go to before reaching and fighting Vicar Amelia. Starting from the Hemwick Charnel Lane lantern, head down the steps and continue along the path forward and up the far stairs. Continue to fight your way up the hill until you reach a closed gate that can't be opened and turn around, taking the path to the left and making the first left down the hill full of gravestones.

After reaching the bottom of the hill, follow the path to the right and take the elevator to the right back down to the area before the Lantern to open a shortcut. Back at the top of the elevator, continue along the bridge, and up into the farmhouse. In the back will be a ladder that leads up to the roof, with the path forward being to walk along the ledge of the roof to the left.

Watch out for the enemy hiding around the corner that will try to push you off the roof with their first attack.

The roof will connect to a hill that leads to a silo that players can take to reach the area below. To your left will be a gate that can be opened to make an easier shortcut back to the lantern. The Witch Of Hemwick will be directly ahead in the building at the top of the hill following the path to the left.

Fighting The Witch Of HemwickThe Player Fighting The Witch Of Hemwick

  • Low overall defenses to all damage types
  • Slightly lower defense against arcane, but a very small difference overall.

The main gimmick to this fight is that the Witch is invisible and hiding somewhere in the room, becoming visible when you get close while a large shadow enemy will continuously be summoned to hunt you down. There is also a second Witch that will appear after the first one dies, with them able to revive one another if you take too long. To win this fight, ignore the visible enemies and run along the edge of the room to find the Witches. When one is found, get a few quick attacks in to make them teleport and keep running to stay ahead of the shadow enemies. Overall this fight is easy if you keep moving and stay away from the enemies that actually do damage.

How To Equip Runes In Bloodborne

After defeating the Witch Of Hemwick, a room in the back of the building can be accessed that will have only a dead body that is holding the Rune Workshop Tool. With this in hand, return to the Hunter's Dream and into the workshop, going to the back to interact with the Memory Altar.

The first three memory slots can have any regular rune equipped, with all three slots immediately available. The final slot is saved for Oath Runes, which is available right away. Oath Runes are much rarer, often tied to side quests or joining covenants, and offer larger rewards than most of the basic runes. All runes can be equipped and unequipped as often as players would like at the Memory Altar, with no cost or restriction there to stop you.
