Summary
- Sony's return to Tokyo Game Show after 5 years fuels speculation of PS5 Pro reveal and Bloodborne news.
- Bloodborne, a Sony co-developed title, may see a resurgence with potential remaster or sequel announcement.
- Fans excited for a Bloodborne remaster should approach rumors cautiously, but a PS5 Pro launch title seems likely.
Sony's upcoming appearance at the 2024 Tokyo Game Show marks the first time in 5 years that the company has participated in the event, sparking all kinds of rumors as to what Sony is planning to announce at the convention. With the existence of the PS5 Pro all but confirmed by Sony, the prevailing theory is that the company will be lifting the veil on its mid-generation hardware upgrade, but some interesting developments over the last several weeks are also pointing to something Bloodborne- related. And while rumors of a Bloodborne sequel, remaster, or remake have been common in the near-decade since the game's initial release, the reveal of the PS5 Pro could be a perfect moment to see them come to fruition.
An outlier in the FromSoftware catalog, Bloodborne is one of the only games from the studio to feature co-development from Sony and publishing as a first-party title. While the Demon's Souls remake is also a PlayStation exclusive, its development was handled by Bluepoint Games, making Bloodborne the only official FromSoftware title to remain a system exclusive. Bloodborne continues to endure as one of FromSoftware's most popular games, and the recent PS Stars listings and Official Bloodborne Guide repress may point to the title's resurgence as part of a larger announcement.
Bloodborne-Centric News is Sending Fans Into a Frenzy of Speculation
Earlier this month, Sony began to roll out the relaunch of the PlayStation Stars program following a months-long outage. In just the first few days following the program's North American refresh, a user spotted a listing for a PS5 version of Bloodborne's The Old Hunters DLC, sparking plenty of speculation regarding the existence of a remaster for PC and modern hardware. While the listing appears to have been nothing more than an error, it's still been enough to excite fans hoping for the long-awaited PC port of Bloodborne. The existence of a Bloodborne remaster should be taken with a grain of salt, but it certainly lines up squarely with Sony's push into PC and the expected unveiling of the PS5.
Perhaps more interesting, though, is the reprinting of both the Bloodborne and The Old Hunters collector's edition guides as the Bloodborne Complete Edition Guide. Long out of print, the Future Press Bloodborne guides continue to fetch high prices on the secondary market, and the combining of both books into a single, new volume is certainly enough to raise an eyebrow. Further, the book's projected release date of September 30, 2024, will see the complete guide launch hot on the heels of the 2024 Tokyo Game Show and any announcements it brings to the table.
Whether Bloodborne Or Not, The PS5 Pro Will Likely Have an Accompanying Launch Title
Bloodborne fans should keep their anticipation in check and approach all rumors cautiously, but the fact remains that the PS5 Pro is all but certain at this point. Months of leaks and studio insight into the game development process for the PS5 Pro leave only Sony's official confirmation as the final piece of the puzzle, and it's almost a guarantee that Sony will want to have a technical showpiece for the PS5 Pro to help push undecided PS5 owners into purchasing the mid-generation upgrade. The PS4 Pro's launch almost directly coincided with 2018's God of War, and it's not hard to imagine a Bloodborne remaster being the ace up Sony's sleeve for the launch of the PS5 Pro.
Bloodborne's 10th anniversary is fast approaching, and the game remains one of the most beloved FromSoftware titles for the way it is diametrically opposed to many of the core elements and mechanics of FromSoftware's own Dark Souls trilogy. Upgrading the title to run in 4K at 60 FPS has been on many Bloodborne fans' wishlists for years, and a Bloodborne remaster that accomplishes just that on the PC and PS5 Pro could very well be enough to push players into upgrading their PlayStation 5 consoles.
