There are three major collectible currency-like items players can collect in Blue Prince: Keys, Gems, and Gold. While Gold is relatively common and Gems are relatively rare, Keys are somewhere in the middle. Used to unlock doors and certain objects, this Blue Prince resource is necessary to progress deeper into the Mt Holly Estate, where locked doors become more common.

This Blue Prince Keys guide explains how to get more Keys in Blue Prince, details what you can use Keys for, and lists every major source of Keys in the game that we have discovered.

This Blue Prince Key locations guide is spoiler-free, though it does hint at the existence of certain rooms you are unlikely to find in early runs.

What Are Keys For In Blue Prince?

In Blue Prince, Keys are used to unlock locked containers and locked doors. Locked trunks have a chance to spawn in certain rooms, and they can only be opened by using a Key or a Sledgehammer to break the lock. Locked Doors are a whole other obstacle.

Essentially, the further you get into the estate, the higher the chance that doors will be locked. This also applies to keycard doors, though you only need to find one keycard to open these. You will consume one Key when you use it to unlock a container or door, and the higher the room rank, the higher the chance that doors connected to that room will be locked.

Though Keys are not used as a currency like Gold or Gems, you should still be mindful when spending your Keys to unlock doors and containers. If you run out of Keys and can't progress through a locked door, you may have to Call It A Day earlier than you wanted to.

The Lock Pick can be used on multiple doors, but has a high chance to fail. If you find this item, use it before regular Keys on every locked door to save your Keys for doors that fail the check.

How To Get More Keys In Blue Prince

Draft Rooms With Inherent Key Rewards

There are a handful of rooms in Blue Prince that reward Keys by default, including the Storeroom, Nook, and Garage. Of these three Key locations, Blue Prince players can get the most from the Garage, but this special room can only be placed in the West Wing of the manor.

  • Storeroom: 1x Key
  • Nook: 1x Key
  • Garage: 3x Key

You may also find Keys randomly in rooms that do not distinctly display that they contain keys. For example, there is a small chance for a Key to spawn on the desk in the Study, on the coffee table in the Security room, and many other locations. Look in out-of-the-way areas to find more hidden Keys.

Find Keys In Special Item Rooms, Like The Toolshed

There are a few rooms that will always contain several special items taken from a pool that includes collectibles like Gold and Gems, tools, and other special items. In the Closet, Walk-In Closet, Toolshed, and other rooms that reward a specific number of randomized rewards, you may find Keys in addition to other rewards.

Don't count on these sources, as the pool of items that the rooms pull from is quite large. But it can be a nice surprise to find a Key in one of these dead-end rooms when you need one most.

Complete The Billiards Room Dartboard Puzzle

One of the most reliable ways to get keys is to complete the Dartboard puzzle in the Billiards room. The Blue Prince Dartboard puzzle requires players to use addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to solve four problems, displayed in different colors.

If you are able to get all four right, you will reveal a secret compartment behind the dart board that contains a Key item. This does not just include regular Keys, it can also reward special Keys (like the Key to the Secret Garden), and the Keycard. Most of the time, though, you will get 2x Keys for finding the Billiards room puzzle solution.

Purchase Keys From The Locksmith & Other Shops

The Commissary and the Locksmith are two shops that sell Keys in Blue Prince. While the Locksmith room will always let you purchase Keys, the Commissary inventory changes between runs and may not always include Keys. Both of these vendors may have both single and multi-packs of Keys to purchase, so be sure to save your Gold.

The Locksmith is typically found in the second half of the manor in ranks 5 and up, while the Commissary can be drafted throughout the manor at all ranks.

Find More Keys In Locked Trunks & Other Containers

Throughout the manor, you may find locked trunks that can only be opened with a Key or a Sledgehammer. Though it might seem counterintuitive, there is a high chance for locked trunks to contain keys, so it's not the worst idea to spend a Key to open a locked trunk, especially if you have plenty to spare.

They can also be opened with a Sledgehammer, though. Look for the Sledgehammer in Green rooms (especially the Conservatory), the Toolshed, or certain shops that will sell you a Sledgehammer in exchange for Gold. If you have one of these, you won't have to spend a Key to open a locked trunk.

Certain Constellations Reward Keys

As you continue to draft the Observatory room, your Star count will increase, giving access to new (and even multiple) constellation bonuses. One constellation titled 'Clavis, The Key' will grant you +1 Key if discovered. To get Clavis, you must have at least 8x Stars, which means you must have drafted the Observatory at least eight times.

Later in the game, you will be able to see multiple constellations through the telescope at the same time, so the +1 Key reward from Clavis, The Key can pop up again, even if you have more than 8x Stars. Be sure to check the Observatory as often as you can for free items and day-long bonuses that can positively (or negatively) affect your run.
