There aren’t a lot of mechanics in Blue Prince, but the ones it does have are very well-built. After all, it is a puzzle game that thrives off of the player exploring a few key gameplay features in great depth to achieve victory.
One of the most important things that players need to manage during their daily forays into the manor are Steps. There are a few different ways to get steps in Blue Prince, but some are much more effective than others.
Complete Blue Prince Achievement Guide
To get every achievement and earn every Blue Prince Trophy, players must complete some of the toughest challenges in the game.
What Are Steps in Blue Prince?
Steps are essentially your stamina bar in Blue Prince. At the start of each day, the player gets a set amount of steps. Whenever you change rooms, you will use up one step. When your steps run out, you’ll become exhausted and end the day by returning to your camp outside the manor.
There are other ways you can expend steps as well. Some red rooms take away more steps, like the Gymnasium, which takes 2 steps to enter, and the Weight Room, which halves your total steps. Additionally, if you draft the Hovel, you will use steps instead of gems to draft special rooms. This increases your step expenditure and makes them all the more valuable.
Blue Prince: How To Increase Allowance
If you increase your Allowance in Blue Prince, you will begin each day with a starting sum of Gold to spend in shops.
How to Get More Steps in Blue Prince
Managing your steps is extremely important in Blue Prince. Thankfully, there are a few different ways to regain your steps inside the manor:
- Purple Rooms/Bedrooms: There are eight purple rooms, many of which directly give you additional steps. If you see a Nursery, draft it, as it will give you five steps each time you draft a bedroom, meaning any purple room. One powerful combination is drafting a Nursery and then drafting a Bunk Room, giving you 10 steps at once.
- Dining Room: A blue room that can appear anywhere on the map, the Dining Room serves the player a gourmet dish that gives them 20 steps after they’ve drafted at least one room in the eighth row. Additionally, it can give you an additional 10 steps if you meet certain conditions for drafted rooms (i.e., you’ll get 10 extra steps with the Steak if you have a Trophy Room in your manor).
- Kitchen: This is a shop room that serves the player food in return for coins. It has one special food item that gives you steps based on different conditions, like how many rooms of a certain type you’ve drafted in the house.
- Pantry: The pantry is a common corner room that always contains some coins plus a little snack for you to regain a few steps.
- Sauna: The Sauna is a dead end room that can be added to your draft pool if you draft the Pool Room. Once drafted, it will add an additional 20 steps to your next day, which means that you’ll start tomorrow with a big buff.
- Laboratory Experiments: The Laboratory Room has a terminal that allows the player to start experiments. To start the experiment, players get to pick one of three "If" and three "Then" statements to make one experiment statement that gives them a bonus if they hit certain conditions. Some of these boons can include extra steps.
- Constellations: The Slice and Farmer’s Apple constellations will provide extra steps and make apples give the player extra steps respectively.
- Food: There’s a chance to find food in a newly drafted room, and you can unearth food from dig sites with a shovel as well. These food items provide a few steps each, though some can be more useful than others. Food items include Banana, Apple, and Turnip, etc.
- Apple Orchard: Players can unlock the Apple Orchard by finding out the lock’s code through a picture in the dark room. It is a permanent upgrade that gives the player an additional 20 steps each day once unlocked.
- Running Shoes: The running shoes are a simple item in Blue Prince that will stop your steps from being consumed every so often, helping you a lot in the long run.
- Salt Shaker: The Salt Shaker gives the player one additional step whenever they eat food that grants them steps. Though this isn’t very powerful on its own, it can be quite valuable if the player encounters food items often on their run.
