Summary

  • Borderlands 4 will have the largest weapon selection in series history, with "billions" of weapons and accessories to acquire.
  • Senior project producer Anthony Nicholson says Borderlands 4 has "unexpected" drops, including something different from weapons or items.
  • Gearbox wants to create exciting moments for Borderlands 4 players seeking new and rare loot.

Borderlands 4 senior project producer Anthony Nicholson confirmed that the upcoming looter shooter will feature the largest weapon selection to date with "billions" of weapons to acquire. The producer also confirmed that Borderlands 4 loot drops may include "something" different from a weapon or item to create memorable moments for players.

After months of speculation, Borderlands 4 was announced at Gamescom 2024 Opening Night Live this past August. A subsequent Borderlands 4 trailer was revealed at The Game Awards 2024 to much fanfare from the community. The trailer unveiled the game's setting, Kairos, along with the four Vault Hunters that players can choose from for their playthrough. Like previous games in the Borderlands series, players can team up in co-op to take on bandits, monsters, and other sorts of enemies on a massive planet full of secrets and loot. Loot drops are "infinitely varied," so one player's experience acquiring new weapons and gear may be very different from another player.

Borderlands 4: Predicting the Siren's Powers

Between subtle clues and popular fan theories, Borderlands 4’s mysterious new Siren Vault Hunter’s powers may have already been discovered.

Borderlands 4 will have billions of weapons and accessories for players to acquire, and the game will have the series' largest weapon selection ever, according to a recent GamesRadar+ interview with senior producer Anthony Nicholson. Nicholson explains that the developers are "always adding more guns, manufacturers, legendary weapons and opportunities for customization and player expression." When asked if the weapon rarity system would receive any changes in Borderlands 4, Nicholson didn't confirm or deny any changes. However, he did state that the studio wanted to "create exciting moments when a rare weapon, item, or something altogether unexpected drops" while players explore the world of Kairos in Borderlands 4.

Borderlands 4 Will Have Billions of Weapons, Accessories, and "Unexpected Drops"

  • Borderlands 4 will have billions of weapons and accessories, while Borderlands 3 has roughly one billion weapons and items.
  • The game's producer didn't confirm if the rarity system has changed in Borderlands 4.

In comparison, Borderlands 3 had roughly one billion guns to acquire, so Borderlands 4 players will have a vastly larger pool of loot to get drops from. Gearbox has likely upgraded its loot system for Borderlands 4 in order to make billions of potential weapon and accessories drops possible. Moreover, Nicholson's "unexpected drops" tease suggests there will be something more than just weapons and guns, so players seeking the best possible loot should have countless hours of playtime ahead of them.

More details about Borderlands 4 are expected to arrive in early 2025 with a full gameplay trailer, if Gearbox's plans haven't changed. Take-Two Interactive previously stated that Borderlands 4 is planned for release in fiscal year 2026, so it will likely launch between April 2025 and March 2026. Leading up to the eventual launch, Gearbox will likely give Borderlands fans more SHiFT codes so they can enjoy more loot in Borderlands 3 before jumping over to the highly anticipated sequel.
