An urgent request is posted on a wall in Carcadia, and Borderlands 4 players who task themselves with this unique side mission contract will need to visit Leopold in the Ruined Sumplands to hear more of the tremors that threaten the Electi through the trembling ground of Carcadia Burn. The plot thickens as players discover a sentient Order synth, but shooting and looting aren't so simple in the Fault Hunting side mission, which involves a fair few puzzles that players need to solve. We've listed a step-by-step of Fault Hunting so you never miss a thing, including the optional objectives and the puzzles to ensure you make it to the other side.
How to Find the Facility Entrance in Fault Hunting
How to Search Area 0/2 in Fault Hunting
After players have ventured west of Carcadia into the Society for Amateur Seismology Enthusiasts at the Ruined Sumplands, they will have spoken with Leopold and begun their journey to the Rumbling Cleft. Inside this cave, players are going to have to clear it of the Creeps that have nested here. Upon defeating the Creeps, a geyser will spawn, but players shouldn't jump on it just yet. There's an optional objective to search the area, and both of these can be completed by picking up the Seismic Damage ECHO Log at the destroyed drill just before the bunker door, and then examining the bunker door itself.
After picking up these optional pieces of evidence, walk into the geyser to see your character soar high up in the air. Now, facing the ledge on the northeast side, press the jump button twice for added height, and glide with the jetpack until you make it up the ledge, where you can now follow the linear path into the facility.
How to Open the Facility Door in Fault Hunting
How to Get Through the Facility
Once players have walked far enough into the facility, they will find that the door in front of them is not open, but in fact, malfunctioning. The door refuses to open, and will constantly open slightly before closing up again. In order to open the facility door, stand to the left of it and shoot at the power source that becomes visible once the door opens slightly.
You can now enter the door and drop down into another room, where you will have an optional objective to search the server room. This is done simply by examining the scene of Creeps and a dead Order bot on the floor. After which, head to the south side of the room to examine the power source.
How to Direct Power to the Server Console in Fault Hunting
Fault Hunting Puzzle #1 Solution
The video above details how players can easily complete the direct power to the server console puzzle located in the facility. The puzzle itself involves looking at the blue railings that connect the power source, and connecting them with railings that can be pulled with the grapple hook to close the circuit. For more descriptive text on how we did it, this is how we rotated the railings, starting from the closest to the power source:
- Rotate One Time
- Rotate Three Times
- Rotate Three Times
After doing this puzzle, the circuit is complete, and players can head to the server console to hack it with ECHO-4. However, doing so will spawn Creeps that players need to fight. After, they can return to ECHO-4 and reveal the next step of the quest.
How to Reach Genone in Fault Hunting
Genone Facility Location
With the server hacked, players are free to leave the facility in search of Genone. Players can either follow the south room that just opened to exit the cave, or fast travel via the map. Players will want to head to the Yawning Yard in Lopside, Carcadia Burn, where they will face the edge of the cliff and drop down to find a secret cave entrance that contains a locked facility door. Approach the door to see it open via Genone's invitation, but beware the Creeps inside. After they've been defeated, continue through the facility where you will eventually be forced to fight synth prototypes, which are essentially just stronger Order forces.
How to Direct Power to the Door in Fault Hunting
Fault Hunting Puzzle #1 Solution
With the Order forces destroyed, it's time to start the second puzzle of the side mission, which involves directing power from the generator on the south of the room to the locked door on the east side of the room. This puzzle follows the same format as the first, in which players use their grapple hook to position rails to complete a circuit. However, there are more rails this time, and there's also a second door to open for a free Red Chest. Players can find how to open both of these in the video above, but the step-by-step instructions below will also be there to guide you. Just be sure to start from the first rail at the power source:
- Rotate Once
- Rotate Once

How to Confront and Beat Genone in Fault Hunting
Genone Legendary Loot Drops
It's now time to kill Genone, but first, players need to follow through the door that players opened with the puzzle. Players will enter a room that closes behind them, and gas begins to fill the room, but it's not lethal, so just ignore it. Follow north until you find a ladder, and climb it to reach the room before the boss encounter. Players will want to make sure that they have a Shock weapon and a Corrosive/Cryo weapon, as Genone has a Shield for his first health bar and Armor for his second. Once players are ready, drop down into their boss arena and begin the fight. Genone does have Order troops to back him up, so take care of them to avoid being overwhelmed. His attacks mostly use Shock splash damage, so stay on the move to avoid them.
Genone can be farmed for the Oscar Mike and Recursive Legendary gear!
Where to Find the Control Room Keycard and Power Down the Facility in Fault Hunting
How to Shut Down Genone's Facility
With Genone defeated, it's time to close down this factory once and for all. Players can loop around to the back of the cylinder that held Genone to find the Facility Override - Clearance Zadra item, which is the control room keycard. Take this keycard up the stairs to the south wall to interact with a computer panel, which opens a locked door. Once inside the room, flip the switch to power down the facility. This will complete the quest, earning players some nice Cash and XP. Just don't forget to come back here if you want to farm Genone for his dedicated Legendary loot drops!
