Borderlands 4 will have an optional combat radar when it launches in September. The latest entry in the looter shooter franchise has faced quite a few ups and downs over the past few months as fans have rejoiced over some announced changes and criticized others. It seems Gearbox is listening to the feedback, though, as it is adding the radar to Borderlands 4 after seeing enough demand from its fanbase.
The news cycle around Gearbox's upcoming shooter has been a bit of a roller coaster. Just as gamers celebrated the news that it won't, in fact, cost $80, Borderlands 4's hefty minimum PC requirements dampened the excitement for some, as just over half of all Steam users don't have the specs to run it. Thankfully, one of the latest updates about the game is good news for many.
Borderlands 4 Adding Helpful Quality of Life Feature
Borderlands 4 is adding a particularly helpful quality-of-life feature to the game, coinciding with the updates to the franchise's skill trees.
News of the combat radar came from a Twitter thread from Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, who explained that the team wasn't planning to include the feature from the start but began looking into whether adding it was possible as more fans requested it. According to Pitchford, some developers found the time to create the radar and included it just before the game went into pre-launch QA testing. The radar won't be in the Borderlands 4 hands-on preview build of the game, but it will be available upon the title's full release this fall.
Borderlands 4 Has Added an Optional Combat Radar
The radar will be optional and off by default, so players who want a clearer view of the environment or a bit of a bigger challenge in combat can leave it off if they want. Anyone disappointed by Borderlands 4's lack of a minimap, however, may find it handy when taking on waves of enemies in larger, more open environments. The game is also adding several other highly requested features, like manual healing items, more weapon customization, and mission replays, so there appears to be a lot for longtime fans to look forward to.
How the radar and other fan-requested features help the game overcome some recent negative press remains to be seen. Pitchford faced criticism over tweets about Borderlands 4's price before Gearbox confirmed that it would be a $70 title, and many fans haven't been happy with the way the CEO has responded to negative feedback. At the same time, there's plenty of excitement around the game, too, and many gamers seem happy with the direction Gearbox is taking the franchise in after Borderlands 3. Of course, players won't know the full picture until Borderlands 4 drops this September.
