Borderlands 4 offers mayhem-fueled looting and shooting for up to four players in a session, and the best part about that is players can wreak havoc all across Kairos with their friends regardless of what platform they're playing the game on.
Cross-play is indeed available in Borderlands 4, but there are a few things you should know about it. If you're having trouble getting it to work, or if you have any questions that need answers, here's a guide to help you out.
All Borderlands 4 Editions – Which One Should You Buy?
There are 3 different editions of Borderlands 4 that players can pre-purchase, but what does each of them come with, and which is worth it?
How to Use Crossplay in Borderlands 4
Crossplay should be enabled by default in Borderlands 4, but if it isn't, then you can toggle it on or off by going to the Session Settings menu, which you can find either on the main menu or on the pause menu when in-game.
Here, you can find two Crossplay-related options:
- Personal Crossplay: This setting dictates whether players from other platforms can join your sessions.
- Party Crossplay: This one is just an indicator that lets you know if someone else in your party has turned their Personal Crossplay setting off.
For the purposes of enabling crossplay, all you need to worry about is the Personal Crossplay setting. If you want to play with friends from different platforms, then everyone in the party must have their Personal Crossplay settings turned on. After that, players should be able to squad up like in previous Borderlands games.
Gearbox SHIFT Accounts
Before you can use crossplay in Borderlands 4, you'll need to sign up for a SHIFT account. You can do this via the SHIFT website, and yes, you can log-in using the storefront account you're using to play the game (Steam, PS, Xbox accounts, etc). Once you login, go to the Gaming Platforms tab and check if your SHIFT account is linked to your platform's account.
Is There Cross-Progression in Borderlands 4?
Unfortunately, cross-save and cross-progression won't be available on BL4's launch. As per a Steam post by the developers, the game will not support these features when it's released. Gearbox did say on the post that cross-play and cross-progression are on their radar, but they neither confirmed nor denied that they will become available in the future.
For now, be aware that if you play on one platform, you likely won't be able to access your existing characters if you buy the game again for a different platform, regardless of whether or not you use the same SHIFT account to play Borderlands 4. With that being said, players will want to be ready for a commitment when they first start the game, unless they don't mind playing through the game all over again.
