Borderlands 4 has been suffering from performance issues on a variety of PC hardware, whether it's a mid-range system or a high-end one. Some of the major uplift in performance comes from enabling the Frame Generation feature on Nvidia, AMD, and other GPUs, which is unfortunately greyed out for many players. Whether it's a bug or an intentional barrier, this guide will help you fix this issue with a few workarounds so you can enjoy Borderlands 4 at maximum FPS.

How to Fix "Frame Generation Greyed Out" Issue for Borderlands 4
Frame Generation is a feature that drastically boosts performance by predicting multiple frames ahead of time, which smooths out the gameplay and increases FPS. Due to the unoptimized nature of Borderlands 4, this feature is a must-have if players want to experience the fast-paced action of the game without lag. However, the feature is currently greyed out for players who want to use the AMD FSR Frame Generation variant, instead of the Nvidia DLSS one.
Here's a workaround for players to fix the "Frame Generation greyed out" issue and enable FSR Frame Generation on all GPUs.
- Head to the Start Menu and enter the settings. Alternatively, you can choose to search for settings to access them.
- In settings, head into the Display settings, and then into the Graphics option.
- Expand the Advanced Graphics Settings tab and turn off Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling.
- Once it's done, restart your PC for the changes to take effect.
After performing the workaround mentioned above, players will be able to activate the Frame Generation option after switching the in-game upscaling option to FSR in Borderlands 4.
Doing the workaround above will instead grey out the DLSS Frame Generation option.
How to Enable DLSS Frame Generation on Older Nvidia GPUs (DLSS Enabler)
The DLSS Frame Generation feature is limited only to users of Nvidia RTX 40 series or higher GPUs. However, players can use a third-party tool called DLSS Enabler to turn on DLSS Frame Generation for older Nvidia GPUs, even possibly for other AMD GPUs.
Here's how to install DLSS Enabler for Borderlands 4.
- Visit the official GitHub repository for DLSS Enabler and download the.exe file under the latest release.
- Open up the downloaded installer, and choose the Borderlands 4 install directory as DLSS Enabler's install target. Players can find the exact directory by heading into Steam > right-click Borderlands 4 > hover over Manage > click on the Browse Local Files option.
- In the Components section, select the options depending on your GPU (reference the image provided above).
- Go ahead and install.
Now all the files for DLSS Enabler will be placed inside the Borderlands 4 install directory. Now, all you need to do is launch the game, switch to DLSS in upscaler options, and turn on DLSS Frame Generation. This will help the majority of players enjoy the game at high frame rates.
