With Borderlands 4 continuing to experience severe performance problems for many players, some modders have decided to take matters into their own hands. It hasn't taken long for Borderlands 4 modders to get to work on their own solutions, rather than waiting for Gearbox Software to do it for them.
It's a shame that much of the discourse surrounding Borderlands 4 has been overshadowed by its significant performance issues. The general sentiment seems to be that the game's actual content is very good, but even players on extremely hefty PCs are finding that they're not getting the FPS they might expect. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford has been addressing Borderlands 4's performance issues on X daily, claiming that unhappy players should "code your own engine and show us how it's done."
Borderlands 4 Players Have Until September 18 to Claim 2 Shift Codes
Borderlands 4 gets two new SHiFT codes, which reward players with a Golden Key each, which can be used to gain powerful free loot.
New Borderlands 4 Mods are Improving the Performance
In the days since Borderlands 4's release, several mods have been released addressing the performance on PC. The most notable are Ultimate Engine Tweaks and Borderlands Optimizer, which have almost 50,000 downloads between them at the time of writing. Ultimate Engine Tweaks aims to "remove most stutters, improve performance and stability, decrease input latency, improve picture clarity" with "no visual loss," while Borderlands Optimizer "reduces stuttering by optimizing shader compilation and assets streaming."
Given the prevalence of Borderlands 4's PC performance issues, it's no surprise to see mods like this gain traction until the game is better optimized in an official capacity. However, it's worth noting that even when using these kinds of mods, individual mileage may vary. What works for one player may not work for another, but it doesn't hurt to try these solutions to find one that improves things.
Borderlands 4 is still in its early days, and expecting the technical state of the game to improve with future updates is more than fair. Beyond that, Gearbox offered a look at Borderlands 4's post-launch roadmap a few weeks back, with plenty more content on the way over the next few months. Hopefully, the performance issues will be but a distant memory by the time new content is released by Gearbox.
