Gearbox Software has announced a new release date for Borderlands 4, with the game now slated to launch on September 12 rather than its previously announced drop date of September 23. The looter shooter is one of the most anticipated games of 2025, and now, eager players will be able to snag Borderlands 4 a tad earlier than expected.

Despite the recent much-maligned live-action film, the Borderlands franchise continues to be one of the most popular in gaming, with countless players flocking to the many titles in the long-running series for some humor, gunplay, and treasure hunting. The next game in the series has made some big promises, with Borderlands 4 boasting more weapons and items than any single player could ever hope to find in their lifetime. Fans will be treated to a seamless open world as they step into a new Vault Hunter's shoes, ready to take on a terrifying dictator dubbed the Timekeeper. Thankfully, the wait to snag Gearbox's latest title has just been briefly shortened.

Borderlands 4 Should Prevent a Classic Looter Shooter Problem Before it Happens

Given the franchise’s history, one recurring problem seems inevitable for Borderlands 4, though there’s still time to prevent it before release.

While Borderlands 4's release date was originally listed as September 23, Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford has announced that the game will now be headed to store shelves on September 12. The reason for the title being moved up by two weeks was not revealed, but many speculate that it may have something to do with the potential launch of Grand Theft Auto 6, which currently doesn't have a release date. According to Pitchford, development on Borderlands 4 has been going incredibly well, with the Gearbox boss calling the progress "the best case scenario."

New Borderlands 4 Release Date

  • September 12, 2025

While countless members of the franchise's community are eager to see what the next entry has in store, Borderlands 4 has already faced ample negativity, even before its release. In March, Pitchford asked that, instead of criticism, potential players should cheer on the developers and share useful feedback after the game hits shelves. More detailed information about Borderlands 4 will be revealed at an upcoming PlayStation State of Play on April 30. Fans can tune in at 2 PM PT to learn more about the title's characters, story, and new mechanics.

Earlier this month, it was confirmed that Borderlands 4 would be coming to the Switch 2, along with other heavy hitters like Cyberpunk 2077 and Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade. The original game, along with Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, were previously released on the Switch, and it's possible that Borderlands 3 will also be making the leap to Nintendo's upcoming console as well. The Switch 2 will be released on June 5.
