Gearbox Software co-founder and CEO Randy Pitchford has shut down fan theories that Borderlands 4's release date was moved forward due to Grand Theft Auto 6. The upcoming instalment in the Borderlands series was initially set to launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2 on September 23, but its release date was recently moved up by almost two weeks to September 12.
In a short video posted on Pitchford's Twitter account, the Gearbox CEO stated that "everything is going great" regarding the development of Borderlands 4. As such, the studio has decided to move the game's release date forward to September 12. Alongside the massive announcement, PlayStation also confirmed a new State of Play event for April 30, which will be dedicated solely to Borderlands 4. The event will showcase over 20 minutes of new weapons, abilities, missions, and more for the upcoming shooter.
Grand Theft Auto Fans Want to See 1 Big Change in GTA 6 Online
Some vocal Grand Theft Auto fans are hoping that GTA 6 Online will make one big change compared to its immediate predecessor.
Borderlands 4's Release Date Change Isn't Because of GTA 6
As Take-Two Interactive is the parent company of both Gearbox Software and Rockstar Games, fans have been speculating for some time that Borderlands 4's release date may be tied to Grand Theft Auto 6. Many have already theorized that Grand Theft Auto 6 likely won't launch in September, as Take-Two won't want two of its titles competing with each other. However, with Borderlands 4's release date now moving forward by almost two weeks, some believe it may be due to Grand Theft Auto 6's release date possibly being set for the end of September or the start of October. Unfortunately, Randy Pitchford says that's not the case.
The CEO didn't mention Grand Theft Auto 6 specifically, but did note that the studio's decision to change Borderlands 4's release date is "literally 0% about any other product's actual or theoretical release date." The statement comes after fans took to social media to speculate that the change was to "make room for Grand Theft Auto 6."
Take-Two Interactive has already stated that it won't release Borderlands 4 and Grand Theft Auto 6 near each other, as Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said it wouldn't "stack up huge releases unnecessarily." The surprising change to Borderlands 4's release date, coupled with Take-Two's stance on releasing the two titles close together, is why fans have speculated that the studio is attempting to create a decent-sized gap between the two titles.
The first trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6 was released all the way back in December 2023, but Rockstar Games has remained silent on the highly anticipated release ever since. With it being more than 500 days since any significant news on the title, fans are beginning to grow impatient, which is why such wild theories are emerging almost weekly. But with a new Take-Two earnings call set for May 15, fans are hoping that a second trailer could finally be on the way.
