Borderlands 4 is coming to Switch 2 on October 3, a month after the game's September 12 release on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC. Borderlands 4 developer Gearbox Software had previously made it known to players that the looter shooter would not be released on the Nintendo console alongside other major platforms, instead advertising a late 2025 window. With its release date officially set for early October, Vault Hunters on Switch 2 will have to wait just a bit longer to join friends playing on other consoles.
The later release date for the game's Switch 2 version is likely due to the high system requirements to run Borderlands 4, which are already poised to leave many PC players in the dust. At a minimum, Borderlands 4 requires an 8-core CPU paired with a GPU that has at least 8GB of video memory. Considering a little over half of all Steam users are still running PCs with six or fewer CPU cores, many players hoping to run the newest installment will need an upgrade. Those on the original Nintendo Switch are entirely out of luck, as Borderlands 4 is skipping the console entirely.
Borderlands 4 Has Some Serious Destiny Vibes
Borderlands 4's latest deep dive gameplay trailer proves that the looter-shooter shares more than its genre with Bungie's Destiny 2.
Gearbox Software on Twitter announced Borderlands 4 will be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 on October 3. Whether the game will run on the console at a high resolution and smooth 60 FPS has yet to be seen, but the development team has voiced high expectations for the Switch 2 version despite the later release date. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford in May called the console the "perfect platform" for the game, touting the Switch 2 version of Borderlands 4 as the optimal experience.
Borderlands 4 Is Coming to Switch 2 in October
Crossplay for Borderlands 4 has been confirmed for all platforms, including Switch 2. With players on other consoles enjoying a month's head start on Switch 2, the later release date will undoubtedly put Borderlands 4's balancing features to the test as the influx of new Vault Hunters are paired up with more experienced, better-equipped, and higher-level characters. Hopefully, the new entry's co-op scaling borrows from Borderlands 3, which adjusted enemies and loot to each individual player's level.
Players waiting to experience Borderlands 4 on Nintendo's newest console will have a lot of time on their hands, which could be a blessing in disguise for those who haven't experienced the series' earlier entries. Nearly every Borderlands game is available on the Switch, with many receiving performance boosts when played on the Switch 2. With an extra month to prepare for Borderlands 4, now would be the perfect time to experience the series for the first time, or revisit Pandora once again.
