The newly released Borderlands 4 is quickly approaching three million copies sold, less than two weeks after its launch on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC. The fourth mainline entry in the long-running looter shooter series, Borderlands 4 gives players the massive open world of Kairos to explore, a first in the franchise's history.

Borderlands 4 Fadefields

Borderlands 4 was one of the biggest AAA game releases 2025 had in store, and it seems fans have been showing up in droves to support it. The game topped 300,000 concurrent players on Steam just two days after its release, shattering the franchise's record on the platform. As for the title's critical reception, Borderlands 4 landed an 83 on Metacritic, two points above its direct predecessor, Borderlands 3. The entry's gunplay, character builds, and refined humor and tone have all been praised by critics and fans alike.

Borderlands 4 Has Sold 2.5 Million Copies So Far

Not even two full weeks since launch, Borderlands 4 is quickly approaching three million units sold. According to GamesIndustry.biz, Borderlands 4 has passed the 2.5 million copies sold mark, netting 2K approximately $150 million in revenue so far. Impressively, 1.3 million of these copies have been sold on Steam, despite the game's early performance issues on PC, which have since largely been addressed by developer Gearbox in a recent patch.

While this can easily be considered a successful launch for Borderlands 4, the game's sales numbers trail behind the release of 2019's Borderlands 3, which sold over five million copies in its first five days. The game went on to sell eight million copies by the end of 2019, and currently sits at 22 million total copies sold. However, this makes sense when considering Borderlands 3 followed Borderlands 2, which at that point was considered to be the best game in the franchise. Plus, the seven-year gap between the two games added a whole new level of hype for Borderlands 3 as the years passed. On the flipside, Borderlands 4 has arrived while the franchise has been on a severe downswing in sentiment following the lackluster response to Borderlands 3 and the majorly disappointing Borderlands movie, which released last year. Because of this, gamers have likely been more hesitant this time around, despite all the glowing reviews Borderlands 4 has garnered.

Borderlands 4 will more than likely cross the three million copies sold threshold sometime in the coming weeks as word continues to get around about how much a step-up the entry is from Borderlands 3. Plus, the game's imminent release on Nintendo's Switch 2 on October 3 is sure to help Borderlands 4's total sales number balloon even more.
