Having the ability to summon a vehicle from anywhere in Borderlands 4 is the perfect complement to the game's transition into the open-world format. Kairos is huge, and while you can definitely walk from one end to the other, using a hover bike is always going to be faster (and cooler).
Much like in previous Borderlands games, players can customize Digirunners to a surprisingly high degree. This guide explores all the ways you can mod your vehicles in Borderlands 4, from the cosmetics you can equip to the new Hover Drives that affect how your rides feel.
All Borderlands 4 Editions – Which One Should You Buy?
There are 3 different editions of Borderlands 4 that players can pre-purchase, but what does each of them come with, and which is worth it?
How to Customize Vehicles in Borderlands 4
Now that you can catch a ride from anywhere, the old Catch-a-Ride stations are no longer needed, which also means that you won't be able to customize vehicles from a terminal anymore. Instead, you can mod your Digirunner straight from your ECHO Menu. There's a Customization button next to the SDU button that contains all your unlocked cosmetics.
You can view all of your vehicle-related options in the Vehicles tab of the Customizations menu.
How to Unlock New Vehicles in Borderlands 4
Unlike older games in the series, players only have the Digirunner as their choice of vehicle as of writing. Digirunners are one-person hover bikes equipped with machine guns and rocket pods, and there are multiple Digirunner variants in the game. To unlock more variants, you'll need to either complete quests or level Vault Hunters all the way up to 50.
Paintjobs (which are unlocked by completing challenges and quests) can be applied to any vehicle variant.
What are Hover Drives in Borderlands 4?
Hover Drives determine the performance of your Digirunner. If you feel like your ride is a little too slow or cumbersome, then swapping Hover Drives might do the trick. Again, these are found in the Vehicles tab of the Customization menu, and no, they do not change how your Digirunner looks.
Each Hover Drive has a different stat distribution from the others. For example, the Jakobs Hover Drive has higher handling compared to the rest, but it has slower Speed, Acceleration, and Boost stats.
How to Unlock & Level Up Hover Drives
Unlike vehicle cosmetics, Hover Drives are directly tied to Weapon Manufacturer loyalty rewards. The more you use weapons from a specific manufacturer, the more loyalty rewards you earn, and eventually, you'll unlock the Hover Drive associated with that Hover Drive.
As you continue to get loyalty rewards, you'll unlock higher-level Hover Drives from that manufacturer. With that being said, don't forget to check the Hover Drive menu so you can keep track of your progress.
