Fans of looter games like Borderlands 4 and Diablo 4 are likely well attuned to the loop of battling enemies, claiming the loot they drop, and then sorting through that loot to find the best gear for their build. Although neither Borderlands 4 nor Diablo 4 are ever short on the amount of loot players can find, the quality of that loot can vary widely. It can be tough to separate the wheat from the chaff among all the different colored rarities on the screen after mowing down a group of enemies, and Borderlands 4 and Diablo 4 players can commiserate in the fact that both games lack the tools to make this process easier.
Loot filters are a huge quality of life necessity when it comes to dealing with the high volume of loot games like Borderlands 4 and Diablo 4 throw at players. Both games offer some reprieve when it comes to ensuring the best loot is accessible as players get deeper into the endgame, with Diablo 4 increasing the frequency of Unique drops on higher difficulty tiers and Borderlands 4 introducing Moxxi's Big Encore Machine to make target farming bosses for Legendaries more streamlined than in past entries. However, for all the opportunities these games give players to find rare loot, they lack the loot filters necessary to keep the unwanted loot from overshadowing the best drops.
Both Borderlands 4 and Diablo 4 Desperately Need Better Loot Filters
Borderlands 4's Lost Loot Machine is a Gamble Without a Loot Filter
While the colorful glow of Borderlands 4's weapons make them fairly easy to spot on their own after they drop from an enemy, repeatedly farming a boss using Moxxi's Big Encore can really start to get the loot piling up. Thankfully, Borderlands 4 features the Lost Loot Machine that automatically picks up some of the loot players miss, allowing them to retrieve it at a later time. However, space is limited and there isn't a guarantee that the Lost Loot Machine will pick up the best loot missed by the player.
What Borderlands 4 really needs is a loot filter setting for the Lost Loot Machine, so that players can specify what types of loot they want the machine to prioritize. For example, it could go beyond simply prioritizing the rarest quality loot and be fine-tuned to prioritize a particular manufacturer or type of gear. Adding this type of feature to Borderlands 4's Lost Loot Machine would help it work in tandem with Moxxi's Big Encore Machine to give players the smoothest possible loot farming experience.
The Lost Loot Machine only has 14 slots when fully upgraded, so Borderlands 4 players should clear it out from time to time to ensure they're not potentially missing out on any rare missed goods.
Diablo 4 Might See Some Loot Filter Relief in the Near Future
Much like Borderlands 4, Diablo 4's endgame loot grind can get overwhelming fast simple due to the sheer volume of drops players will be getting from places like Helltide Chests, Infernal Hordes, and Lair Bosses. However, unlike Borderlands 4, Diablo 4's loot is a lot harder to visually parse on the ground, with Legendary and Unique items sharing a similar color scheme. Add in the marks that denote an Ancestral item's Greater Affixes, and Diablo 4 players can have a tough time understanding at a glance if a piece of loot is worth keeping or scrapping.
To simplify this process, Diablo 4 could use a loot filter that allows players to highlight gear with specific properties, such as those with a certain number of Greater Affixes or Uniques of a certain gear type. There is hope that Diablo 4 will get a loot filter like this sooner rather than later, as Blizzard has acknowledged the limitations of the games "smart loot" system and heard the community's call for a loot filter tool. Two of the biggest looter games on the market could take their gameplay to the next level with an improved loot filter, so hopefully Borderlands 4 and Diablo 4 fans will see this type of feature implemented in a future patch.
