This article contains spoilers for Boruto and Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo.
Over a decade ago, fans were saddened when one of the biggest shonen series ever, Naruto, reached its conclusion. However, when a sequel was announced, there was hope in the community again. Boruto started off brightly with the movie, written by Kishimoto himself. But years later, it has become rather clear that Boruto has not lived up to the expectations, and if anything, has tarnished the legacy of some characters from the original series. Even though Boruto is fun in its own way and certainly is exciting, it has largely failed as a Naruto sequel, and its sales just keep on dropping without the likes of Naruto and Sasuke playing any role.
It's Real: Kishimoto Confirms The Death Of One Of The Uzumaki Family In Boruto
Fans were shocked by Kishimoto's death of an Uzumaki in Boruto.
At the same time, Jujutsu Kaisen just got its own sequel, called Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo. While it’s hard to fully judge how this series will do in the long run, so far, fans have been loving it. Modulo has been able to introduce its own fresh and lovable cast, along with tremendous wordbuilding without relying on old characters to necessarily uplift it.
Boruto Couldn't Live Up To The Standard Of Naruto
JJK Modulo Has Proven To Be An Amazing Jujutsu Kaisen Sequel
Boruto is Naruto’s official sequel series. After Naruto ended in 2014, Boruto started serialization in 2016, just two years later. A key difference between the two series, however, is that Boruto isn’t actually written by Kishimoto, the original creator. Instead, it is written by his former editor, Mikio Ikemoto. That said, Kishimoto does supervise everything that happens in the story. While fans were definitely excited to see what the next generation of Naruto’s world had in store, the series has been, for the most part, a disappointment for most fans of the original series.
The Boruto manga relied on the popularity of old characters to rise, mostly Naruto and Sasuke. The new cast that came in was not strong enough to get the fans’ attention, apart from characters like Kawaki and Boruto. Worst of all, the legacy of the old characters was ruined in Boruto as the series kept using them as a stepping stone for the new characters. Naruto and Kurama's bond was shattered and Sasuke's Rinnegan was taken from him. Sakura has never done anything significant in the sequel, while even the other Kage played a role once.
Speaking of sequels, a new one for another huge Shonen Jump series started not too long ago, and it has actually been a huge success. When Jujutsu Kaisen ended, fans were certain that the franchise didn't have much of a future, but out of absolutely nowhere, Gege Akutami revealed a sequel series, called Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo. With just a few chapters, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo has enamored the fans, and some would even say its writing is better than the original, as Gege has grown tremendously in the spheres of writing manga.
Make Way For Gojo Satoru's True Heir In Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo
Gojo is dead, but his heir is dominating JJK Modulo.
While some old characters are mentioned, and some might return like Yuji, the cast majority of the heavy lifting is done by the new trio of Yuka, Tsurugi, and Maru. They're lovable enough to carry the plot by themselves, and the new lore introduced in the story is absolutely top-notch. Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo is a perfect sequel to Gege's dark and brutal first series, and it lives up to all the expectations that the original series set.
Another interesting detail is that both Boruto and Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo feature aliens, but Modulo has been shown to actually be able to introduce these extraterrestrial creatures properly. Their race, culture, habitat, way of life, and their reasons for doing what they do are all put under the microscope in Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, and the best part is that it still feels like a part of the main story, which Boruto couldn't achieve with the Otsutsuki.
Boruto Sales Keep Dropping, And Fans Are Concerned for the Future Of The Series
Boruto Needs Naruto and Sasuke To Return
Boruto is still a popular series, but the low sales are getting all the more apparent. With every new volume, the sales keep plummeting. The series peaked with the major battles featuring Sasuke and Naruto, and since then, it has significantly crashed.
Boruto Uzumaki and the rest of the new generation characters fare far better in Two Blue Vortex, but they simply don’t have fans invested enough. The series will only pick up momentum once the two giants, Naruto and Sasuke, eventually return.
As far as JJK Modulo goes, it's hard to say how it'll fare in sales as it has yet to drop a volume, but that aside, the writing for the series is flawless and every fan of JJK is absolutely loving it so far.
