This article contains spoilers from the Boruto series.

When it comes to the Boruto series, the author has introduced the fans to a plethora of new abilities. Of course, old abilities remain just as important in Boruto, and fans know that some of them are elite powers such as the Rinnegan which was wielded by Sasuke Uchiha until very recently.

While old abilities certainly do exist in the Boruto series, fans know very well that they do not hold the same level of power anymore. This is down to inconsistencies in the writing of the series, and the author seems to have taken this decision to nerf the old characters. The Rinnegan is greatly nerfed and it is almost as if it doesn't even exist. At the same time, new eyes have appeared in Boruto, such as the Kokugan, which appears to be an even stronger dojutsu at this point in time.

The Rinnegan Isn't Being Utilized Properly In Boruto

The Rinnegan Isn't Being Utilized Properly In Boruto

In the Naruto series, the Rinnegan was an incredible god-level power that only a few characters could wield. Its overall abilities were absolutely immense and none could stand in its presence. This power was simply way too overpowered, given that it granted the ability to manipulate the Six Paths, along with the power of this Outer Path, which allowed one to control life and death itself. In Boruto, it is almost as if this eye doesn't exist.

Apart from the Six Paths, the Rinnegan has another great power. It's the severe Seventh Path, called the Outer Path. Those with the power of the fabled Rinnegan have the power to rule over life and death. Nagato is giving up his life because he trusts you. — Konan to Naruto about the Rinnegan

It is quite shocking to see Sasuke never utilize the power of the Six Paths properly in the Boruto series with his Rinnegan, especially in the manga. Even the Shinju, all of whom seem to have the Rinnegan, don't even utilize its most basic powers and it is there just for show.

Since Sasuke has also lost the Rinnegan, the eye is officially dead in the series and it is highly unlikely that anyone else will gain it. Instead, the Rinnegan has been replaced by another powerful eye in the Boruto series, and that is the Kokugan.

The Kokugan Is The Strongest Eye In The Boruto Series

The Kokugan Is The Strongest Eye In The Boruto Series

While the Rinnegan is the power of the Six Paths, the Kokugan seems to have a theme of eight going for it, which suggests that it might be even stronger. The Kokugan is essentially a black eye with eight golden triangular spokes in it. This eye allows the user to cast two powerful jutsu called Sukunahikona and Daikokuten.

Your eye allows you to shrink yourself and anything you touch instantaneously. But, you cannot shrink humans or other living beings, can you? — Sasuke Uchiha to Isshiki Otsutsuki

The first jutsu allows one to shrink themselves as well as any inanimate objects to microscopic sizes and return them to their normal sizes instantaneously. It is an immense power that can escape even the range of the Senrigan.

Daikokuten, on the other hand, allows one to gain access to a pocket dimension within which time doesn't flow at all. Anything that the user wants can be stored in the pocket dimension, including food and even humans. This eye also allows the user to summon giant blocks that seem to be too strong even for Six Paths ability users to counter.

Kawaki Will Surpass Isshiki's Kokugan Usage

Kawaki Will Surpass Isshiki's Kokugan Usage boruto

So far, only Isshiki Otsutsuki has utilized the maximum potential of the Kokugan. However, Kawaki has also inherited this power from him. Because of that, Kawaki will most likely go on to surpass his usage of the Kokugan. Kawaki has all the experience of Isshiki, thanks to the Karma that he inherited from him, and he will go on to reach an even higher level in the future.

Since none of the main characters have the power of the Rinnegan, it will naturally fade from existence. This eye, which was once exalted and still holds power way too great for one to comprehend, has essentially been ruined in Boruto, and that is something that the fans hate to this day.

Hopefully, in the future, fans will go on to see Kishimoto and Ikemoto give a proper reason as to why the Rinnegan was treated so badly in the story and why characters such as Naruto and Sasuke were nerfed tremendously for the sake of the next generation. For now, fans have to accept the Kokugan as the superior eye to the Rinnegan, sad as that may be.
