Boruto now seeks to upgrade this blade to a level never seen before.

Boruto: Kishimoto Confirms A Major Power-Up For Kawaki
Kawaki is in for a major power-up as the Boruto story progresses.
To do that, Kashin Koji most likely helped him out with Prescience, and using the future, he figured out technology that doesn't exist in the world right now. This technology is essential for Boruto Uzumaki to win in the battles against the Shinju, and it'll also make him a lot stronger. What exactly the technology is, isn't known at the moment. This technology was devised by Sumire in the future world, and now, Boruto has a scroll that lists it in great detail.
In the latest Boruto chapter, Boruto was seen handing over the scroll and the sword to Sumire and now, she'll begin working on the blade to turn it into a special weapon that's going to help Boruto out a lot more.

Boruto's Power Up Will Extend To Sasuke Uchiha After His Return
Sasuke's Sword Will Give Him New Strength
Boruto Uzumaki's sword will soon be upgraded greatly. Whatever powers it'll gain will benefit him greatly in the upcoming battle against Jura and Hidari, and fans absolutely cannot wait to see that. At the same time, fans must also remember that whatever power Boruto Uzumaki gains will also extend to Sasuke Uchiha after his return. Right now, Boruto Uzumaki is wielding the sword of Sasuke, so he will have to return it eventually. When he does, Sasuke will gain access to this power.
