Summary
- Bosch: Legacy was canceled due to Amazon's aim to attract a younger audience.
- The move to the Ballard spin-off could have been planned, but happened sooner.
- Concerns exist over the younger cast in Ballard affecting realism.
The fans of Bosch: Legacy are coming to terms with the abrupt ending of the show last week, after Amazon's cancelation over seven months ago. This led to a Harry Bosch-style investigation into the reasons why Bosch: Legacy was canceled. Even though it was a shock to many, Gregory Scott Cummins, who played Crate Moore, wasn't totally surprised by Amazon's axing of Bosch: Legacy.
In an exclusive interview with The Best War Games, Cummins said he thought Bosch: Legacy' s cancelation had a lot to do with Amazon's urge to appeal to the younger demographic. Cummins has worked in the movie and television industry for over 40 years, and his knowledge is exemplary, and while he was saddened by the lack of an ending for Bosch: Legacy, he fully supports the upcoming Ballard spin-off.

Bosch: Legacy's Cancelation Wasn't A Complete Surprise To Cummins, As He'd Experienced First Hand How Amazon Wanted To Appeal To The Younger Demographic
The end of Bosch: Legacy wasn't a creative decision, and the majority of fans have known that ever since Amazon announced that the third season would be the final one back in September 2024. The streamer tried to claim it was all part of the plan, and the initial reaction from the cast and crew was muted. However, when Titus Welliver embarked on the Bosch: Legacy final season promotional tour, it became clear how saddened he and the rest of the cast were about the axing. However, Gregory Scott Cummins claims he wasn't so shocked about Bosch: Legacy's sudden demise. In an interview with The Best War Games, he said:
It wasn’t a surprise that they canceled Bosch Legacy. This all tied together, and it reinforced what we thought, which was that they were possibly trying to have some of the older people on Bosch Legacy, but also go for some of the new. They have the demographic numbers, but I've heard through the grapevine that the average viewer of Bosch: Legacy is 50 years old and over. So once they get a certain number of people signing up in that age group and not many more, they've already got them. I kind of saw it coming with this move to Ballard where Amazon wanted to go younger. Bosch: Legacy wasn’t bringing in younger people.
Cummins and Troy Evans, who portrayed Crate and Barrel on Bosch and Bosch: Legacy, were in a different position to some of the other actors, because they had seen how their roles had diminished over the years. Cummins and Evans had regular recurring roles in over 60 episodes of the original Bosch series. However, the legendary actors only appeared in six of the 30 episodes of Bosch: Legacy.

The Move To The Ballard Spin-Off Might Have Been On The Horizon But Amazon Decided To Do It Sooner Than Expected
Not many prestige television shows last for ten years, but that is essentially what happened with Harry Bosch's crime saga. The original Bosch series began in 2014, and ran for seven seasons, and the 'spin-off' was launched in 2022 on Amazon Freevee, and ran for three seasons before it was canceled. Cummins told The Best War Games:
Each season of Bosch and Bosch: Legacy was based on two novels. There were seven seasons of Bosch, 14 novels, but there were 16 novels that were written. But they were running out. Bosch was moving to private investigations. And then the last five or six novels have been Renee Ballard novels. So the move was coming. But they had one more season of two novels that they could have written for Bosch Legacy Season 4. But they just moved it over to the Renee Ballard a little quicker.
The creative team had a lot of ideas about how to expand the Bosch-lore, and continue the show indefinitely, as Michael Connelly had written books about Harry Bosch joining the San Fernando police force as a volunteer cold case investigator, and that was the plan for Bosch: Legacy season 4. As Cummins stated, it sounds like Amazon decided to pass the baton to the Ballard spin-off earlier than planned, and bring Harry Bosch's solo stories to a complete standstill. It would have been great to see more of Crate and Barrel, but Cummins remained upbeat about the situation:
I'm rooting for the Ballard series just as strongly as I did for Bosch Legacy, even though they cut back on Crate and Barrel because I love the people who make it. In terms of Amazon wanting to go and get a younger demographic audience. It's just the way it is in the world. That's just business. I don't take that personally at all.
Cummins did point out one big problem with the Ballard spin-off which will have to be addressed at some point:
My only concern is that the detectives followed Bosch because it was very realistic and true to life. They are going to have a lot of other younger people helping Ballard out in the cold cases. And obviously, Bosch is going to be there at times. I mean, I don’t think they’re going to lose him completely. He’s crucial.
This is a very valid point, and it could be the one thing that could potentially lead to the unraveling of the Ballard spin-off. The cold case unit in Connelly's books is full of retired detectives who volunteer their services. Based on the casting of Ballard, it looks a lot like Maggie Q's character will be surrounded by younger people, so Amazon can cater to that 'younger demographic'. Cummins is a big supporter of law enforcement, and his portrayal of Crate Moore has received a lot of positive feedback from real-life detectives. These detectives will switch off if they think Ballard doesn't represent them accurately, and so will the rest of the fan base, who essentially want more Harry Bosch, Crate Moore, Barrel Johnson and other fan favorites.
