Summary

  • Villain Preston Borders returns in the season 2 finale of Bosch: Legacy, stirring up trouble for Harry Bosch.
  • Borders claims to have killed Kurt Dockweiler and that Bosch hired him for the hit.
  • Season 3 of Bosch: Legacy is likely to explore Borders' storyline further and potentially reveal the truth about the hit.

Bosch: Legacy is known for following up on plot threads set up in the original Bosch series on Prime Video, with villains like Carl Rogers continuing to cause trouble for the ex LAPD cop turned private investigator Harry Bosch. However, season 2 brought back another villain who hadn't been seen since season 5 of Bosch. That villain is Preston Borders, who returns to stir up trouble for Bosch in the season 2 finale.

Bosch: Legacy has been renewed for season 3, and is currently in production, and although it's not been confirmed, Preston Borders is highly likely to return in the new season to reveal what he's been up to and if he actually was involved in Kurt Dockweiler's death, but more importantly, did Harry Bosch hire him to carry out the hit?

Harry Bosch has always been tough on justice, but would he really cross the line into murder?

Who is Preston Borders in Bosch and Bosch: Legacy?

Maddie confronting bosch at the end of season 2

At the very end of Bosch: Legacy Season 2, Harry Bosch goes out to walk the dog but leaves his phone at home, which leads Maddie to see a collect call from an inmate in Wasco St Prison on her father's phone. Maddie answers the call and is put through to a convict called Preston Borders, who tells Maddie he has killed Kurt Dockweiler and was ordered to do so by Harry Bosch.

Preston Borders is a rapist and murderer who appeared in five episodes of Season 5 of Bosch. Harry Bosch originally arrested him in 1987. Borders was only prosecuted and convicted of one murder, but Bosch strongly believed he was responsible for as many as three murders. When Borders appears in season 5 of Bosch, his case is up for review, with Bosch's conduct in the case being questioned. Bosch ignores the idea put forward that Borders could be innocent and stands by the investigation he conducted.

By the end of the season, the case is thrown out, and Preston Borders remains behind bars where he belongs. As far as everyone was concerned, this was the end of the matter and Borders story was complete. But that all changed when he reappeared at the end of Bosch: Legacy season 2 with some rather incendiary claims about the ex-LAPD detective.

What could happen with Preston Borders in Bosch: Legacy season 3?

Preston Borders' return to the Bosch universe has set up all sorts of possibilities for future stories in Season 3. Borders does appear a few times in Michael Connelly's book series, so his re-appearance feels totally organic and fitting. He is portrayed by Chris Browning, and is highly likely to return in Bosch: Legacy season 3, although nothing has been confirmed.

Borders is serving a life sentence in Wasco St Prison for murder, so his appearances in season 3 are likely to be from behind prison walls, unless he escapes, of course. However, it is unlikely Bosch: Legacy would go down that route with the character, and as season 5 of Bosch showcased, Borders is capable of causing plenty of trouble from behind bars.

Amazon Freevee have really backed Bosch: Legacy by renewing it for season 3 even before season 2 had aired, which has given the producers plenty of time to map out future plot lines ahead of time. Tom Bernardo told Collider in an interview:

Oh, it's an enormous amount of faith, and it's a great gift that we never take for granted, that we try to honor. From a storytelling standpoint, knowing that you're gonna have real estate to build these stories and that you can naturally build up to certain moments.

Henrik Bastin also weighed in on the freedom Freevee has given them in the same interview with Collider:

That's what we're exploring with these cards back here, and Season 3 is going to step into that world. But to your point, Chris, having Freevee invest in us as storytellers and say, “This is a world we want to continue to explore,” is a gift we don't take for granted and that we try to honor by telling good stories that we hope are satisfying.

Bosch: Legacy Season 3 is set to have a darker tone with potential ramifications for Harry Bosch after the re-emergence of his longtime enemy, Preston Borders. The audience has been left with a tense cliffhanger heading into the new season, with fans questioning if Harry Bosch really did order Kurt Dockweiler's death. There seems to be two possibilities: Bosch had arranged for Dockweiler to be murdered or someone was trying to frame him. Since Bosch left the LAPD and set up as a private investigator, he has shown he is willing to step outside the constraints of the law to get the job done. However, many fans feel ordering someone to be murdered is not in his wheelhouse. However, if Bosch was to order the hit, it would be out of character to hire Preston Borders to do it, especially with their history.
