Square Enix has confirmed that the upcoming Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster will allow players to set encounter rates to zero, despite initial gameplay screenshots showing otherwise. The zero encounter rate option will not be available in Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster at the start, though Square Enix clarified that it would not take players long to unlock.
Initially released on the 3DS in 2012 before heading to the West in 2014, Bravely Default featured a turn-based battle system and story motifs reminiscent of older Final Fantasy games. Bravely Default tells the story of the four "Warriors of Light" named Tiz, Agnes, Ringabel, and Edea, who traveled alongside Airy the cryst-fairy to bring the power of light back to four darkness-corrupted crystals scattered throughout Luxendarc. Along with the original story from the 3DS release, Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster will also feature some exclusive mini-games that utilize the Joy-Con 2 controllers' mouse mode and other functions.
Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster Hands-On Preview
The Best War Games had the opportunity to play Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster at PAX East 2025, and here are our initial gameplay impressions.
After initial reports stated that Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster would not allow players to change encounter rates to zero, Square Enix said that this would not be the case. According to a Bluesky post by Jason Schreier of Bloomberg, a Square Enix representative stated that the zero encounter rate option will be in the upcoming Bravely Default remaster, just like in the original game. This option comes alongside other encounter rate choices that range from 50% to 200%. Schreier confirmed the news after playing through a Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster demo build at PAX East in Boston. However, the zero encounter rate feature will not be available upon starting up Bravely Default for the first time. Schreier added that the zero encounters feature would likely be an ability that players unlock during normal gameplay, though details about accessing said ability remained light.
Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaster Will Have a Zero Encounter Rate Option
Just checked out a demo of the upcoming HD remaster of Bravely Default for Switch 2. Good news: a rep for Square Enix told me that despite rumors suggesting otherwise, you can in fact still set random encounters to 0% like in the original game — Jason Schreier (@jasonschreier.bsky.social) 2025-05-13T15:31:05.611Z
It remains to be seen if the encounter-eliminating ability of Bravely Default's HD remaster will be tied to a Job or a piece of equipment. In the original Bravely Default release, various Asterisks granted characters access to Jobs like Black Mage and White Mage, each with specific abilities that could be paired with other Jobs and equipment to provide some unique battle builds. When paired with the Brave and Default command systems, Bravely Default players had to strike a balance between defending against enemy attacks and unleashing a flurry of Brave commands.
Bravely Default: Flying Fairy HD Remaste r is one of 20 Switch 2 launch titles available starting June 5. Only time will tell how well the upcoming remaster will perform on Nintendo's new console.
