Atari and Limited Run Games announced a new game compilation titled Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection, scheduled for release in 2025. The Purffect Collection will include the first three Bubsy games launched on the Genesis, Game Boy, SNES, and the controversial Bubsy 3D, all of which Limited Run Games stated will run on its Carbon Engine.

Created by a defunct game developer called Accolade, Bubsy was originally conceived as a competing mascot to rival Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog. Bubsy's debut game was released on the Genesis and Super NES in 1993, under the title Bubsy in: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind. With the ability to run and glide, the first Bubsy game saw the titular orange bobcat fend off the alien Woolies and save the planet's yarn ball supply from being stolen. A year later, Bubsy 2 was released. In 1996, Bubsy 3D was released on the Atari Jaguar and PlayStation and was widely panned by fans for its graphics and gameplay. Bubsy 3D was the last game in the series for two decades, until 2017's Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back.

Gex Trilogy Bringing the Classic Games to Modern Platforms

A reveal trailer confirms that the Gex Trilogy is set to bring the classic games to modern platforms, with preorders opening soon.

With Limited Run Games at the helm, Bubsy fans will soon experience the wise-cracking bobcat's first adventures. During the 2024 edition of LGR3, Atari and Limited Run announced Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection with a short video that parodied the James Bond film series. Despite the 007-inspired title crawl, expectations quickly turned as soon as Bubsy appeared. The bobcat kicked the letters on the screen and broke the fourth wall by asking the audience if they were expecting someone else. Bubsy then clicked on the TV remote and quickly panicked as various screen options such as volume and contrast erroneously appeared. The trailer was then cut to show the game's logo and 2025 release window.

Bubsy Will Return in The Purrfect Collection

Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection will use Limited Run's Carbon Engine, which allows games to be emulated on modern platforms. According to The Purrfect Collection's Steam page, the compilation will include four titles. These games are Bubsy in: Claws Encounters of the Purred Kind, the Game Boy and 16-bit versions of Bubsy 2, and Bubsy 3D. The Purrfect Collection will be produced by Audi Sorlie of Digital Foundry, who previously worked on Arzette: The Jewel of Faramore, and a retro documentary of the Bubsy series.

Bubsy joins other retro series including Tomba and Gex that have received revivals from Limited Run Games and the Carbon Engine. What changes and enhancements will be made to the upcoming Bubsy collection remains to be seen.
