Following fan concerns and rising uncertainty, Bungie announced plans to reveal what it has planned for Destiny 2 and the franchise, hinting at plans for "multi-year journey" as well. For the past couple of months, Destiny 2 has seen a renaissance of sorts thanks to strong content additions from the free Into the Light update, as well as the big Final Shape expansion which was able to bring the decade-long Light and Darkness conflict to an end.
Unfortunately, the positivity hit a major bump in the road as Bungie announced another round of mass layoffs, impacting over 200 employees, seeing projects canceled, and some moved to Sony entirely. The news left both the industry and Destiny 2 community stunned, saddened, and frustrated, leaving players worried about the future of the game and franchise. While Bungie did reveal its plans surrounding the upcoming Episodes as well as teasing something called Frontiers, new reports following the layoffs seemed to indicate Destiny 2 would be getting much smaller updates focused more on repeatable activities. Bungie has recently come out, hinting that news regarding the game and franchise's future is on the way.
Due to the recent layoffs, Bungie postponed certain weekly communications, such as last week's blog post and potential reveals for Destiny 2's Solstice of Heroes event, which kicked off in full at this week's reset. However, the radio silence has come to an end following the difficult week and the official Destiny 2 Team account on Twitter is promising some new details on how Bungie intends to keep Destiny 2 and the franchise for a long time.
Bungie Promising More Destiny News Soon
While acknowledging the community's uncertainty due to the recent changes at Bungie, the post doubles down on the studios' commitment to the Destiny franchise and promises continued transparency and updates. On top of that, a second Tweet confirms that the studio is planning to address what the future of Destiny looks like soon, confirming plans for a new multi-year journey. While no details were provided, the studio intends to first nail down a date for a potential blog or stream, thanking fans for their patience in the meantime.
In the meantime, fans still have plenty to look forward to, with Episode: Echoes slowly approaching its third act and the annual Solstice event in full swing. With 2 additional episodes planned, recent leaks and rumors also seem to indicate that Destiny 2 is getting some sort of 10 year anniversary update. Dataminers have seemingly uncovered parts of the rumored activity, which include things like new armor sets, limited-time triumphs, as well as events being held inside The Pale Heart destination. While Bungie has yet to officially acknowledge such content, fans are expecting an announcement soon, at least ahead of the ten-year anniversary of Destiny's original launch date on September 9, 2014.
