Summary

  • Bungie has plans for Destiny 2 in 2024, including small releases and updates throughout the first half of the year, as well as the introduction of a new project called Into The Light.
  • The highly-speculated game, Matter, is unlikely to be released at all, as internal sources claim it was quietly canceled in 2020 and confirmed by a popular YouTuber.
  • The Final Shape, the conclusion of Destiny 2's 10-year saga, will be released on June 4, 2024, and is expected to start a new direction for the game with a campaign and Raid launch shortly after. Marathon news and a trailer may come on Bungie Day, at a PlayStation Showcase, or The Game Awards in 2024.

2023 hasn't been the best year for Bungie and Destiny 2, its main active title within the live-service spectrum, but there are good things to come from the company in 2024 based on what players and fans know so far. For starters, Destiny 2's 2024 news includes several small releases and updates from January through the beginning of June, with players getting to experience the Guardian Games event as well as a brand-new project in the form of Into The Light, which is yet to be revealed in full detail. There are also other possibilities for Bungie to shift its focus to other titles, and 2024 could see more information come out about the upcoming Marathon.

It's worth noting that, originally, players expected Bungie to be working on four different games: Destiny 2, the recently revealed Marathon, the highly-speculated Matter, and another unannounced title. The latter is unlikely to show up in 2024 given the Bungie layoffs last year and the impact they have had on the community at large. Furthermore, a popular Destiny 2 YouTuber by the name of Aztecross revealed in November 2023 that internal sources stated Matter had been quietly canceled all the way back in 2020, so there is nothing to expect from it.

Destiny 2's Seasonal Artifact Should Get One Major Change in The Final Shape

Destiny 2's The Final Shape will likely be a revolutionary release, but if and how it will impact the seasonal artifact remains an important question.

Destiny 2's The Final Shape is to Be Released on June 4, 2024

After a long period of silence following the layoffs, despite the fact that a delay to June 2024 for Destiny 2's The Final Shape had been disclosed unofficially, Bungie finally confirmed as much and set a new release date for the expansion. The Final Shape is the conclusion of the series' 10-year saga surrounding the forces of Light and Darkness, and it's expected to deliver a conclusion to the story with its campaign and subsequent Raid launch, starting a new saga and direction for the game as early as one week after release.

Destiny 2's Episodic Model and Episodes One and Two

With The Final Shape, Destiny 2 is also launching a brand-new live-service approach that this time focuses on three different four-month cycles instead of the typical four seasons. Alongside The Final Shape, Episode 1 - called Echoes, will be released. Little is known about it at the moment, but based on its associated art, it seems Destiny 2's Echoes will revolve around Osiris and the Vex, possibly marking a return to Venus and the start of a new saga.

Marathon's Gameplay Trailer in 2024

This is far from confirmed at this stage, but it would make sense for Bungie to reveal more about Marathon in 2024. According to the leaks from after the layoffs, Bungie initially planned on launching Marathon in 2024, but the game was tentatively delayed to 2025 after Escape From Tarkov players found it uninteresting. This is because, like Escape From Tarkov, Marathon is a PvP extraction shooter. Bungie has yet to reveal gameplay details, and it would be sensible for the company to showcase a gameplay trailer to set expectations for the game's launch - whenever that happens. Another option would be another generic trailer, possibly focusing on other aspects of the game like the setting or the characters.

When to Expect Marathon News in 2024

There are three main possibilities for more Marathon news to show up. The first is at any big PlayStation showcase in 2024; the second is on Bungie Day, which occurs on July 7; the third is at The Game Awards in December 2024. There is no indication of whether a trailer is happening or when, but these three possibilities are the most likely based on Bungie's history and following its acquisition by Sony.
