Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Zombies fans had low expectations for Season 2, as based on previous games, a significant down period between DLC 1 and 2 maps was expected. However, for this year’s 115 Day, Treyarch shocked fans by not only unveiling details about the next map, but confirming its release for the launch of Season 2. While it remains to be seen if the developer can keep up this unprecedented pace of map releases for the game’s entire life cycle, The Tomb's imminent debut has undoubtedly gotten the fan base excited.

While Black Ops 6 fans will get to experience The Tomb in all its glory come January 28, Treyarch has already unveiled a fair bit of info about the upcoming Zombies map. Fans have been provided with some details about the dig site’s lore, a snippet of the map's hidden Easter egg song, and a teaser for a Wonder Weapon ‘inspired’ by the mode’s past. An Origins-like Pack-a-Punch camo has also been hinted at for the map, as have numerous side quests, but the most exciting teaser of all may be for a regular weapon. According to Treyarch, “one of the most iconic SMGs in Zombies history” is being brought back to add to the map’s personality, and there are a few weapons that immediately come to mind upon seeing this phrasing.

What SMG Could CoD Zombies’ Tomb Map Be Bringing Back?

Call of Duty Zombies, and the wider franchise as a whole, has had no shortage of memorable SMGs for players to wield. Black Ops 6 has already paid tribute to one of the series’ fictional creations, the VMP, while many others have become fan favorites over the years. Though there has been one Zombies-only SMG that could be featured in The Tomb, that being the Bootlegger from Black Ops 3 (a reskin of the Type 100), the following options seem much more likely given their popularity:

  • MP40: Arguably the most iconic Call of Duty Zombies SMG ever, the MP40 was an integral part of the World at War and Black Ops experiences. Many Kino Der Toten fans will likely remember it as a go-to wall weapon to build points, and it even left its mark in Black Ops 2 and Black Ops 3 thanks to its inclusion within Origins.
  • PPSh-41: Known for its rapid fire rate and unique visual design, the PPSh-41 is one of the most viable SMGs in Zombies history. It has such a strong reputation among fans that it returned to a thunderous reception in Black Ops 3’s Gorod Krovi map, and many would surely like to use it again within a modern Zombies game.
  • Thompson: While this seems like the least viable of the three weapons because of the Teddy is a Liar blueprint, which gives the C9 SMG a glowing, Thompson-themed makeover, having the actual weapon in the game wouldn’t hurt. Perhaps a Pack-a-Punch upgrade could give it the massive drum mag associated with the Tommy Gun, which left its mark on Zombies fans thanks to Mob of the Dead.

It’s currently unclear if this SMG will have weapon levels and unlockable attachments like Black Ops 6’s other guns.

No Matter What Treyarch Chooses, The Tomb’s Special Regular Weapon is a Big Win

Though the MP40 or PPSh-41 feel like the most likely possibilities for the SMGs that The Tomb could revive, fans are likely to be happy regardless of the gun Treyarch chooses to add. Not only will the weapon be a nice burst of nostalgia, but its inclusion picks up where Citadelle Des Morts left off in regard to making maps more distinct. One criticism levied at recent Zombies modes is that every map feels the same because they share mechanics like weapon rarity, killstreaks, and armor, so adding more distinct features to them goes a long way. More side Easter eggs with exciting rewards is certainly one way to go about this, as are maps with bolder settings, but the importance of unique weapons cannot be denied. One of the many things that made Origins special was exclusive weapons like the MGO8 LMG and Mauser pistol, so the Tomb adding a unique regular weapon of its own is a big win.

Forced to go rogue. Hunted from within. This is Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.

Developed by Treyarch and Raven, Black Ops 6 is a spy action thriller set in the early 90s, a period of transition and upheaval in global politics, characterized by the end of the Cold War and the rise of the United States as a single superpower. With a mind-bending narrative, and unbound by the rules of engagement, this is signature Black Ops.

The Black Ops 6 Campaign provides dynamic moment-to-moment gameplay that includes a variety of play spaces with blockbuster set pieces and action-packed moments, high-stakes heists, and cloak-and-dagger spy activity.

In a best-in-class Multiplayer experience, players will test their skills across 16 new maps at launch, including 12 core 6v6 maps and 4 Strike maps that can be played 2v2 or 6v6.

Black Ops 6 also marks the epic return of Round-Based Zombies, the fan-favorite mode where players will take down hordes of the undead in two brand-new maps at launch. Post-launch, players can look forward to even more exciting maps and groundbreaking experiences dropping into both Multiplayer and Zombies.
