Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 developer Treyarch Studios has confirmed the upcoming shooter will be removing the current weapon attachment unlock system found in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and implementing a more classic design. Come October 25, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 players will be able to unlock weapon attachments per weapon, as opposed to the convoluted system that Call of Duty has currently implemented.
For the past couple of years, Call of Duty players have been unhappy with the unlock system for weapon attachments. Unlike classic entries in the series, Modern Warfare 2 made a major change to weapon attachments, forcing players to use different weapons to unlock attachments for other weapons. In previous years, players simply needed to level up a weapon to unlock all of its attachments, but the change made in 2022 has often been blasted by the community as convoluted and drawn out.
During the massive Call of Duty NEXT event on August 28, Treyarch not only revealed Black Ops 6's multiplayer mastery camos but also showed off the game's new gunsmith and weapon attachment unlock system. In Black Ops 6, players will no longer need to use multiple different weapons to unlock attachments, as each weapon's attachment, including grips, stocks, ammunition type, and more, will be unlocked as players level up their weapon of choice. The only exception to this will be weapon optics, which will be universal across all weapons and won't need to be unlocked individually.
Black Ops 6 Makes Major Changes to Weapon Attachments
In a recent blog post on the Call of Duty website, Treyarch explained how the game's gunsmith and weapon attachments will function. With so many weapons available in Black Ops 6, making each one feel worthwhile is going to be a huge factor. Thankfully, Treyarch says attachments will now almost always come with a benefit and not a detriment, so leveling up weapons and unlocking different attachments will be worth investing time in. The studio also noted that "almost all" optics are shared across all weapons in each class, so players only need to unlock an optic for one SMG to have it unlocked for every weapon in that class, for example.
Weapons will also have a wide variety of camos to unlock, and Black Ops 6's integration with Call of Duty's free-to-play battle royale, Warzone, will also have its own unique camos and progression tracking. Plus, thanks to Black Ops 6's global weapon builds, any custom weapon creations will automatically be shared between multiplayer, Zombies, and Warzone.

Forced to go rogue. Hunted from within. This is Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
Developed by Treyarch and Raven, Black Ops 6 is a spy action thriller set in the early 90s, a period of transition and upheaval in global politics, characterized by the end of the Cold War and the rise of the United States as a single superpower. With a mind-bending narrative, and unbound by the rules of engagement, this is signature Black Ops.
The Black Ops 6 Campaign provides dynamic moment-to-moment gameplay that includes a variety of play spaces with blockbuster set pieces and action-packed moments, high-stakes heists, and cloak-and-dagger spy activity.
In a best-in-class Multiplayer experience, players will test their skills across 16 new maps at launch, including 12 core 6v6 maps and 4 Strike maps that can be played 2v2 or 6v6.
Black Ops 6 also marks the epic return of Round-Based Zombies, the fan-favorite mode where players will take down hordes of the undead in two brand-new maps at launch. Post-launch, players can look forward to even more exciting maps and groundbreaking experiences dropping into both Multiplayer and Zombies.
