This mode changes the core rules of the traditional Zombies experience that most Call of Duty players are familiar with, turning it into a team-based competition with various modifiers that can either help or hinder progress toward the objective and winning the match. With that said, here’s a complete breakdown of how Grief mode works in Black Ops 6.

What is Grief Zombies Mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6?

Two teams face each other in Black Ops 6 Zombies Grief mode

The Grief mode in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Zombies is a 4v4 indirect PvP mode where two teams of real players compete in the same match to survive as many zombie waves as possible — waves that are more populated than in the Standard mode. Teams cannot damage each other directly with weapons or equipment, but they must outplay the opposing team using Capture Zones and Griefs to weaken them and gain the upper hand.

While shooting enemies doesn’t deal damage, it can slow them down, making it easier for zombies to take them out. Melee attacks also push and slow enemy players, but this effect only applies during the actual attack. Additionally, players can’t pass through one another, allowing you to use your body as a blocker to disrupt opponents.

The Grief Zombies mode can be played on any of the available Black Ops 6 Zombies maps, including Liberty Falls, Terminus, Citadelle des Morts, The Tomb, and Shattered Veil.

To win a game of Grief, your team must be the last one standing, meaning all opposing players must be dead or downed at the same time. The mode includes respawn rounds every three rounds, allowing eliminated enemies to return — though with reduced gear.

Capture Zones appear frequently during matches in Black Ops 6’s Grief mode. Once activated, both teams compete to eliminate zombies within the zone before their opponents. The HUD displays how many enemies each team and player must kill. Objectives may vary — from general kills to specific types like Critical Kills, Support and Equipment Kills, or Melee Kills. Players can choose to either focus on completing their objective quickly or disrupt the opposing team’s progress.

When a Capture Zone is secured, the team that failed to capture it will be sent into a Grief. Griefs vary in effect, each introducing a unique survival challenge. These can include: Weapon Nerf, Ammo Drain, Zombie Ambush, Weapon Carousel, or Frozen. Learn how each one works below.

Check out how each Black Ops 6 Zombies Grief works below:

  • Weapon Nerf: Affected players deal significantly reduced damage to zombies while this Grief is active.
  • Ammo Drain: Ammo is gradually depleted from affected players’ weapons, even if the weapon is stowed.
  • Zombie Ambush: An Elite zombie spawns and fights for the team that captured the zone. It ignores them and targets only the opposing team for one minute or until killed.
  • Weapon Carousel: Affected players’ weapons are randomly swapped every few seconds. At the end, they’re left with a random weapon, but its Pack-a-Punch status, rarity, and ammo mod are preserved.
  • Frozen: Affected players’ movement speed is reduced to half.
