Summary

  • The Terminus map in Black Ops 6 Zombies may feature a kraken-like boss, based on an ominous tentacle revealed for the map.
  • It's unclear if the tentacle is a single entity or part of a larger threat that'll appear later as the Zombies boss.

A great deal has been revealed about one of the maps that will feature in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6's zombies mode. So much has been imparted about Terminus, in fact, that its ultimate encounter is all but confirmed, yet Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 may still be thrill players with the cephalopod terror lurking at its heart.

A trailer and detailed blog post have already been released for Terminus, giving away much about Black Ops 6's zombies mode. The blog post in particular, available on Call of Duty's website, gives a breakdown of how round-by-round gameplay will work in Black Ops 6, as well as what buff items will be available. A selection of the island's bestiary is also published here, including rank-and-file undead as well as specialized horrors like manglers, parasites, vermin, amalgams, and more.

Black Ops 6's Terminus Map Is Unsubtle About Its Potential Boss

Amid everything else being revealed about Black Ops 6's Terminus map, Treyarch may have let the climax of its story slip. Terminus is very much themed around its aquatic, island locale; not only does its trailer show flooding, underwater exploration, and the need for boat transport between playable areas, but the map comes with its own kraken. Those that stay in the waters of Terminus for too long will have to face 'The Tentacle', a twisted column of desiccated flesh that bursts from the sea to pursue its quarry.

The blog post that details much of what is now known about Black Ops 6's zombies mode and Terminus map is scarce on details about the true nature of The Tentacle. It describes the entity as 'worm-like', which could suggest that the beast is a single being—a long, slithering mass akin to Dune's sandworm. However, much of how the creature is framed in what has been shown suggests that it's more than meets the eye. Players may have to face off with much more than a single eldritch sea-serpent, and that could make for a really excellent face-off.

Terminus' Tentacle Definitely Looks Like It Belongs To A Bigger Threat

The article on Terminus presents The Tentacle as less of a single creature and more of a map hazard, similar to those seen in past Call of Duty games. While only a single tentacle is noted, its section's title is enveloped in quotation marks, suggesting that there's something players aren't being let in on (which is only emphasized by frequent redacting throughout the post). Moreover, 'tentacle' is a term specific to appendages rather than full creatures, lending further to the idea that this is only one part of a greater whole.

Furthermore, in material thus far released, The Tentacle always leaves part of its form to the imagination. Regardless of whether it truly is a single arm of some body-horror shoggoth thing, there's some essence of it that is fundamentally obscured. Considering how its posing is certainly evocative of a Kraken's tentacle, attacking the player's boat as if it were the ship of a sailor condemned by biblical wrath, it would only make sense for Black Ops 6's Terminus map to feature a battle against some octopus-adjacent whole that this tentacle can stem from.

A Fight Against A Tentacle Monster Wouldn't Be Surprising, But It Could Be Great Fun

Terminus is set to be the biggest map in the history of zombies modes, so it would only make sense for it to house a boss unrivaled by other Call of Duty games. Though it may be a predictable choice for an epic final showdown, especially as The Tentacle already seems to prey on those trying to leave the main part of the island, whatever is truly lurking beneath Terminus could make for an absolutely massive boss, one that could really make the map a living opponent.

Forced to go rogue. Hunted from within. This is Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.

Developed by Treyarch and Raven, Black Ops 6 is a spy action thriller set in the early 90s, a period of transition and upheaval in global politics, characterized by the end of the Cold War and the rise of the United States as a single superpower. With a mind-bending narrative, and unbound by the rules of engagement, this is signature Black Ops.

The Black Ops 6 Campaign provides dynamic moment-to-moment gameplay that includes a variety of play spaces with blockbuster set pieces and action-packed moments, high-stakes heists, and cloak-and-dagger spy activity.

In a best-in-class Multiplayer experience, players will test their skills across 16 new maps at launch, including 12 core 6v6 maps and 4 Strike maps that can be played 2v2 or 6v6.

Black Ops 6 also marks the epic return of Round-Based Zombies, the fan-favorite mode where players will take down hordes of the undead in two brand-new maps at launch. Post-launch, players can look forward to even more exciting maps and groundbreaking experiences dropping into both Multiplayer and Zombies.
