According to a new rumor, Tactical Sprint might be on the chopping block for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7. First revealed with a cinematic teaser trailer as the closer during Xbox's June showcase, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 takes fans into the future as a follow-up to Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 with David Mason as the lead character. The game will also follow in Modern Warfare 2 and MW3's footsteps as it goes back-to-back with 2024's Black Ops 6.
Tactical Sprint was a feature first introduced in 2019's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reboot that allowed players to gain a boost of speed by double-clicking the sprint button. Since then, it's been included in every Call of Duty release except for Black Ops Cold War, and even appeared in Sledgehammer Games' WWII title Call of Duty: Vanguard. Many players aren't a fan of the feature, as it tends to make Call of Duty's normal sprint speed feel slower, making Tac-Sprint the only viable option for keeping up with other players. That said, it does allow players to whip around corners and pull off impressive movement techniques, providing an advantage to those who make use of it.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7's Pre-Order Bonuses Are Already Obvious
Like other entries to the IP, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is expected to come with pre-order bonuses, with some particular benefits being very likely.
Treyarch Reportedly Testing Black Ops 7 Build Without Tac-Sprint
It seems Black Ops 7 developer Treyarch may be toying with the idea of omitting Tac-Sprint from the upcoming 2025 Call of Duty entry. Well-known Call of Duty leaker TheGhostOfHope posted on Twitter, stating that Treyarch has just recently begun testing a build of Black Ops 7 that doesn't feature Tactical Sprint. While this seems promising for players who aren't fans of the feature, Treyarch could simply be testing out other parts of the Black Ops 7 multiplayer experience without plans to leave Tac-Sprint out for the game's final release.
With how massively popular and successful the Battlefield 6 open beta has been in recent days, it's hard not to wonder whether this move by Treyarch to remove Tactical Sprint was made in response to all the hype and praise surrounding BF6, which doesn't have a Tac-Sprint equivalent. If Tactical Sprint does end up being omitted from BO7, console players' left thumb sticks will be able to breathe a sigh of relief, as constantly double-clicking the stick can lead to harsh wear and tear on controllers. Additionally, the potential removal of Tac-Sprint will undoubtedly make Call of Duty's normal sprint feel quicker and useful again, as Tac-Sprint imposed the opposite effect on base sprint over the years.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is expected to have a wider blowout reveal next week during Gamescom Opening Night Live. It's there that the game's rumored November release could potentially be confirmed, as could a Call of Duty Next event which, based on previous years, is expected to happen at some point in September. As for the fate of Tactical Sprint in Black Ops 7, fans will have to wait for one of these events to find out whether the feature will be omitted or included in this year's Call of Duty experience.
