News around Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is starting to pick up some serious pace, with Activision and Treyarch gearing up for another annual CoD life-cycle. A lot of pressure is already being placed on the game as a second consecutive Black Ops entry, with the title being confirmed as a direct sequel to 2012's Black Ops 2. The legacy of BO2 leaves some pretty big boots for Black Ops 7 to fill, with the upcoming project adopting the same semi-futuristic setting.

Reportedly, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 will take place around the 2030s and include a range of sci-fi-inspired equipment, weaponry, and themes. Fans have Black Ops 2 to look towards in terms of predicting how this setting might translate over to Black Ops 7's campaign, core multiplayer, and even its confirmed Zombies mode. One unpredictable part of this semi-futuristic setting concerns Warzone, however. Black Ops 7's premise may provide some of the most distinct changes that the popular battle royale title has ever seen.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 May Force BO6 Into a ‘We Have That at Home’ Situation

With Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 just around the corner, BO6 will surely want to help hype up its successor, but one classic trick may be off the table.

Warzone's Adherence to Call of Duty: Black Ops 7's Gameplay Could Be Very Interesting

The risk that Black Ops 7 runs by releasing directly after BO6 might be mitigated by the different game mechanics and features that its setting will foster. While it has been confirmed that Black Ops 7 will not feature wallrunning or jetpacks, there are still a lot of futuristic features that will define the project. From the brief reveal trailer of Black Ops 7, it is confirmed that the game will showcase the likes of invisibility cloaking, high-tech wingsuits, and autonomous ground combat units.

This should give Black Ops 7 a brand of identity that has not been seen in Call of Duty for some time, especially not within the Warzone era of the franchise. Since Warzone's launch in 2020, Call of Duty has played it fairly safe with its annual settings, largely taking place within the last 40 years. Having said this, 2021's Vanguard did take things back to the Second World War. This older setting introduced the likes of the Caldera map, older weaponry, and fighter planes to Warzone, in what was quite a divisive move.

It can be expected that the Black Ops 7 era of Warzone will introduce the same scale of change, although semi-futuristic equipment and weaponry will hopefully be a lot more conducive to Warzone than Vanguard's WW2-era implementations. Like every annual CoD game, it can be expected that BO7's unique weapons, perks, equipment, and operators will be added to Warzone, and this could be more noticeable than any other changes that fans have seen in recent years.

A Futuristic Map Might Just Be the Tip of the Iceberg For Warzone in the BO6 Era

Adding unique semi-futuristic killstreaks to Warzone would be one great way to add a new feel to the title. Alongside new weapons and equipment, Black Ops 7 could even inspire a brand-new semi-futuristic map for Warzone, allowing its more thematically distinct gameplay elements to feel right at home. It is clear that Call of Duty needs some new inspiration in terms of what major maps might come next for Warzone, and BO7's premise offers the perfect groundwork for a memorable one.

Even if Activision does not want to commit to a major core futuristic map for Warzone, Black Ops 7 could inspire a fresh Resurgence map for the battle royale.

Of course, this will likely come alongside new additions like the wingsuits that have already been confirmed for the upcoming game, and a new map could even be designed around this mechanic. Warzone has even recently had to rely on the return of the classic Verdansk map to tide itself over. While this return was rightfully well-received, enough time has passed for CoD to really look towards what a new era for Warzone should look like. For better or worse, Black Ops 7's sci-fi themes offer a world of potential Warzone changes through things like maps, weapons, vehicles, and more, potentially being a make-or-break moment for CoD's ever-changing battle royale.
