Warning: This article contains spoilers for the campaign of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2023). At the conclusion of the campaign in Modern Warfare 3, players will come face-to-face with the Modern Warfare series antagonist, KorTac, and Konni leader, Vladimir Makarov. Playing as Task Force 141 Captain John Price, players will have the opportunity to draw a sidearm and fire a few rounds at the terrorist leader at the finale of the mission. This begs the question, can players eliminate Makarov in Countdown and end his reign of terror?

Makarov Escapes... Again

While playing through Countdown, players will have to defend against an onslaught of Konni soldiers while trying to defuse a bomb with the help of Sergeant Soap MacTavish. Just as the bomb is about to be defused, Makarov ambushes Task Force 141, incapacitating Soap and Price. As Makarov says his last words to Price and goes for an execution, Soap saves the captain by punching Makarov. Makarov responds to Soap by putting a bullet directly in his temple, then turning to escape once again.

Unfortunately, despite just witnessing the death of Sergeant John "Soap" MacTavish at his hands, players cannot kill Makarov as Captain Price during this mission. When players try to take revenge for Soap's death, they will only have Captain Price's sidearm available to fire, and even with the most precise aiming, players will not be able to damage Makarov as he escapes over the subway tracks.

Players will notice there is no audio response when shots are fired at Makarov, unlike when other enemies are attacked, and players hear the sound of the bullet impact. With the bullet not registering damage on him, Makarov will always be able to make his escape over the tracks. Players will have to settle with disarming the sarin gas bomb, after which the final cutscene of the game will begin.

The original story of Modern Warfare 3 saw Makarov meet his end at the conclusion of the game, with Soap being taken down by an explosion collapsing a building on him earlier in the game. Players then play through the remainder of the game as Yuri and Price chase after and takedown Makarov (not before Yuri is claimed as a casualty as well). Given the death of Sergeant MacTavish at the end of the retold story, the fourth installment may see Captain Price make his final attack on Makarov, taking him down for good.
