Summary

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has started introducing its Gundam-themed Tracer Packs, starting with the MS-06S Zaku II skin.
  • Fans can expect two more packs featuring actual Gundams, bringing iconic characters like Amuro Ray into the game.
  • Despite criticism over bundle prices and unrealistic skins in a military FPS, the crossover between Call of Duty and Gundam may appeal to fans of the long-standing franchise.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has unleashed the first of its Gundam-themed Tracer Packs. The pack, which brings a skin for the MS-06S Zaku II to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, went live in the Call of Duty store June 1 and will be followed up by two others with similar mobile suit-themed skins.

The crossover between Gundam and Call of Duty was announced in May. The Gundam franchise includes dozens of anime series and movies dating back to 1979. The MS-06S Zaku II is a commander-type variation of the more basic suit introduced in the franchise's first series. Multiple characters have been seen piloting this particular model, most notable among them being villain-turned-hero Char Aznable.

In addition to the newest in the line of Call of Duty operator skins, which allows players to look like they stepped right out of Mobile Suit Gundam, the Mobile Suit – MS-06S Zaku II Tracer Pack also comes with a finishing move called Searing Slash, three blueprints, a charm, a large decal, two weapon stickers, an emblem, and an animated calling card, in addition to a new loading screen.

More Gundam Skins are Coming to Modern Warfare 3

While the Zaku II is an iconic mobile suit, it's not a Gundam, and two more packs are on the way to bring actual Gundams into Call of Duty. One, the Mobile Suit – RX-78-2 Tracer Pack will bring in an operator skin based on the very first Gundam of the same name, famously piloted by Amuro Ray, the main protagonist of Mobile Suit Gundam, along with a Newtype Finisher move. The other pack will introduce an operator skin of the much more modern XVX-016 Gundam Aerial from the 2022 anime series Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury. Both of these packs are planned to arrive with extra rewards similar to those in the Zaku II Tracer Pack.

Call of Duty has come under fire from fans for the use of its Tracer Packs. Many of its players have expressed their displeasure with the number of microtransactions in the series, and on top of that, have complained that adding in operator skins based on other IPs ruins the immersive feel of realistic combat that built the Call of Duty franchise into the FPS powerhouse that it is today. While the Emoji Operator Bundle introduced in the current season has been a recent high-profile target for criticism, the Gundam franchise has a long history and a solid fan base that may find the three new Tracer Packs to be a welcome addition to the game.
