Summary

  • Modern Warfare 3 developers have no plans to add 2009 Modern Warfare 2's DLC maps to the game, disappointing fans who were hoping for their inclusion.
  • The game already contains classic maps from other Call of Duty games, such as 2007's Modern Warfare's Crossfire and Shipment, and more may be added from either Modern Warfare or Modern Warfare 3.
  • Modern Warfare 3's Season 1 update will feature four new maps and the return of the fan-favorite Gunfight mode, with 2v2 maps from previous games also included in the map pool.

Modern Warfare 3 developers clarified their plans for the game's future maps, and it looks like fans shouldn't get their hopes up for 2009 Modern Warfare 2's DLC maps to be added. While fans are excited to get brand-new, original maps with Modern Warfare 3's Season 1 update, some were hoping for more fan-favorite maps to be added to the game.

Modern Warfare 3 features some of 2009 Modern Warfare 2's maps. For the most part, Modern Warfare 3's maps are identical to their original iterations. Despite the game's lack of new maps, Modern Warfare 3 enjoyed a highly successful launch. Although the game already contains the entirety of 2009 Modern Warfare 2's launch maps, fans were hoping for some of its more popular DLC maps like Carnival, Storm, Trailer Park, and Fuel to be added to the new game.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Players Think AI Bots Are Being Used in Matches

Many Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 players are convinced that AI bots are quietly being placed into online matches by the developer.

During a Reddit AMA, Sledgehammer Games responded to a fan's question, who was asking about the possible addition of these maps. Sledgehammer explained that at this time, there are no plans to add these maps to the game. Sledgehammer further explained that Modern Warfare 3's seasonal updates will "largely" consist of brand-new maps. The comment's wording seems to infer that Modern Warfare 3 will continue to receive classic maps here and there, but they will be from games other than 2009 Modern Warfare 2's DLC library.

Modern Warfare 3 already contains classic maps from other Call of Duty games like 2007 Modern Warfare's Crossfire, which is featured in Modern Warfare 3's War mode. Sledgehammer also confirmed that Shipment is coming to Modern Warfare 3 in the near future, which is another map from 2007's Modern Warfare. It seems likely that Sledgehammer will follow this pattern by adding more maps from either 2007's Modern Warfare, or 2011's Modern Warfare 3. A crossover with Treyarch's classic Black Ops series maps like Firing Range, Summit, or Slums seems unlikely.

Modern Warfare 3's Season 1 update is coming December 6 and will feature four new maps, as well as the return of the fan-favorite Gunfight mode. Of these four maps, three are brand-new 6v6 maps, and one is a new Gunfight map. The rest of Gunfight's map pool will consist of 2v2 maps from previous games.

Although Modern Warfare 3 is off to a hot start, its release hasn't been perfect. Some fans continue to lament the strength of Modern Warfare 3's assault rifles, which in the right hands can dominate any other type of gun. Historically, the Call of Duty franchise has featured versatile assault rifles. While this is mostly due to the weapon class' inherent nature, Call of Duty developers have usually refrained from making them punishing to use.
