A Call of Duty insider has reported Gunfight is not returning to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in the Season 2 update and players are furious. Fans of the series have already taken ire with some of the choices made for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
Gunfight is a 2v2 game mode, first introduced in 2019’s Modern Warfare. While Black Ops: Cold War also included the game mode, Call of Duty Vanguard discontinued Gunfight, and fans have been requesting its return ever since. The developers have since confirmed Gunfight will make a return in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 but only said, “at some point.” Similarly, players that have invested time in the DMZ mode are unhappy about the DMZ progress reset for Season 2 of Warzone 2.
On February 2, the Call of Duty insider CharlieINTEL reported that Infinity Ward will reveal a full roadmap of the Season 2 content on February 8. A fan replied “Gunfight” with the fingers crossed emoji, and CharlieINTEL replied with a brief and blunt “no.” User Lumenprotoplasma swiftly shared the bad news with the community on Reddit, where disappointed fans have continued the discussion. Commenters have been discussing the merits and demerits of withholding fan favorite content; one user saying that Gunfight is being held back so that players will continue to play until its inevitable release, while another points out that player retention may not last that long if the favorite game modes are not available. While Infinity Ward has fixed some bugs in the recent Modern Warfare 2 patch, it seems as though the game’s biggest problem comes down to understanding the community.
Another user commented to say that Activision is more focused on typical money-making cosmetics rather than giving fans what they want, saying that Gunfight should be simple enough to implement into the game. Similar to Gunfight, fans have been asking to see Infected to return to Call of Duty. With such a well-known franchise, it is important for developers to listen to the audience, however it should be understood that while some decisions are made purely to get more income from the property, implementing changes may not always be as simple as they seem from the outside.
However, the changes that have been made, and still are being made, have not done a lot to instill faith in the community. While some players can still have a lot of fun such as one player with an impressive win/loss stat with no kills in Modern Warfare 2, others are feeling somewhat betrayed by the apparent lack of progress to the franchise. For now, fans will have to eagerly await full detail on February 8 to see what Season 2 holds.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
