- The de-rusted Rust map is jokingly being called "Chrome" by some people because the results are so shiny.
Some Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 fans have adjusted the Rust map to feature rust-free metal. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has evolved through regular updates, with many maps to move between, but a few gamers had a better idea for the Rust location.
When it was released, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 modernized over a dozen Modern Warfare 2 (2009) maps. A lot of the modernizing for the game involves movement, which has changed significantly since the 2009 title. While it received a mixed response at launch, the community applauded the return of some of the most widely recognized places. The improved graphics and gameplay have allowed a new audience of gamers to enjoy some important locations from Call of Duty history, including Rust. One gamer had the idea of removing the rust from the metal objects in Rust, and the map looks a lot different from how fans will remember it.
Reddit user Fo3Jay recently shared four screenshots of the Modern Warfare 3 Rust map with all the rust removed. Rust famously features a central oil rig, with some metal shipping containers surrounding it that provide cover for players looking to hide from snipers. All the metal in the de-rusted Rust map is so shiny that it reflects light, resulting in brightness akin to the Modern Warfare 3 Sling Bag camo. The first image is of an adjusted Rust loading screen, with the second screenshot showing the oil rig from the side, facing a gas tank that aims a beam of light at the player. The final image focuses on most of the map from a distant point of view, showing just how much metal has been de-rusted for this concept, with concrete barriers providing a point of comparison with the original location.
How Did These Modern Warfare 3 Fans Change Rust?
According to Fo3Jay, some 3D artist friends helped to modify the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Rust map. Given that metal used in oil rigs isn't usually as shiny as this de-rusted map, some gamers have called it Chrome instead of Rust. Despite the images including a sniper rifle, the player never scopes in on any of the smaller objects to highlight the attention to detail. The photos focus on most parts of the map, but some areas aren't shown off, notably the bottom level of the oil rig. This may have been a missed opportunity that could be rectified with a video tour of the de-rusted Rust.
As Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 continues to be updated, more maps may be added in future seasons. Given that past games have offered seasonal variants of maps like Shipment and Nuketown 84, this version of Rust could be a unique way of revamping the well-known location.
