Out of the many lethal tactical equipment available in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, the Thermobaric Grenade is one of the least popular choices among average lobbies. It's often overshadowed by SemTex, Throwing Knives, and even regular Frag Grenades.
Despite not being a frequent tool for the average player, this grenade is actually very effective in general combat scenarios. It's commonly used in MW3's Ranked lobbies and even in Warzone matches. If you're wondering why this piece of lethal equipment is so good in high-skill lobbies, here's a brief overview of what it does and what makes it so good.
Why Are Thermobaric Grenades Good In MW3?
SImply put, Thermobaric Grenades act as three grenades in one. It can kill enemies with explosions like a Frag Grenade, disorient people like a Stun Grenade, and deny areas like Thermite. The stun effect alone makes this a very good choice for tactical players, and everything adds to that benefit by being able to kill enemies who are low on health. Thermobaric Grenades can be cooked, further increasing their lethality while giving enemy players even less time to react.
In Warzone, players can stack Thermobaric Grenades to easily flush out and overwhelm enemies hiding in cramped areas. A full squad chucking these grenades at a target can leave their opponent dazed, downed, or dead, provided they don't have the means to escape the salvo of explosives.
As a cherry on top, these grenades also increase the lethality of other explosives against targets that they hit. It works especially well with underbarrel grenade launchers attached to MW3's assault rifles.
However, despite doing multiple jobs at once, Thermobaric Grenades do not overshadow the other grenades that it overlaps with. It doesn't hit as hard as frag grenades, or stun as long as real stunners, or burn as hot as Thermite (it can't stick to things either). Also, they have noticeably long fuse times.
Thermobaric Grenades received a significant buff to its overall usefulness back in Season 3, which is partly the reason why it's so popular in Modern Warfare 3 Season 4. It received a larger explosion radius, stronger explosive damage, and faster fire tick rate.
In normal multiplayer modes, players can get much more mileage out of these grenades in small maps like Stash House, Shipment, and Meat. You can comfortably carry them anywhere, but these maps are where Thermobaric Grenades truly shine.
