The original 2011 version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is being review bombed by angry gamers who aren't happy about the quality of the 2023 game. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is the third installment in the Modern Warfare reboot series, continuing the story from the 2019 game and 2022's Modern Warfare 2. The official release date for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is Friday, November 10, but fans can play the campaign early.
Anyone that pre-orders the game gets early access to the Modern Warfare 3 campaign. Unfortunately, the reaction to the Modern Warfare 3 campaign has been largely negative. Fans have complained about the campaign's short length, the fact that it reuses assets from Warzone, and how it has little in the way of truly new ideas for the franchise. But since the 2023 version of Modern Warfare 3 has yet to actually release, fans are unable to air their grievances on review aggregate sites like they are known to do. So instead, they have decided to review bomb the Metacritic pages of the 2011 original.
Right now, the 2011 Modern Warfare 3 game has an 88 overall critic rating compared to an abysmal 3.6 user rating. It's unclear if these disgruntled fans are mistaking the two Modern Warfare 3 games or if they simply couldn't wait for the 2023 game to launch to post their negative reviews. In the meantime, some Call of Duty fans have started adding their own overwhelmingly positive reviews of the 2011 Modern Warfare 3 game in an attempt to counter the review bombing.
While the games share a name and some of the same characters, the two versions of Modern Warfare 3 couldn't be any more different. The 2011 Modern Warfare 3 was released at a time before Call of Duty games were stuffed full of microtransactions, giving gamers a truly complete experience out of the box. The 2011 game also had a campaign that was generally well-received by fans and critics alike, whereas the 2023 Modern Warfare 3 campaign has been widely criticized.
As far as multiplayer goes, the 2011 Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer had original maps that were built from the ground-up for the game. The 2023 Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer maps are all remakes of maps that were featured in the 2009 Modern Warfare 2. 2023 Modern Warfare 3 has an open world Zombies mode that could be good, but is currently unproven, while MW3 offered a Survival mode on top of Spec Ops missions. Considering this, it's somewhat unfair that the 2011 MW3 is getting targeted because of the problems with the new game, but review bombers will likely turn their attention to the proper game this weekend.
