Summary
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has been a success with players, despite criticism of the single-player campaign.
- Activision regularly hosts crossovers with characters from other franchises to keep players engaged.
- Unconfirmed leaks suggest that Rick Grimes and Michonne from The Walking Dead may be added as operators in early 2024.
Rick Grimes from The Walking Dead could soon be heading to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 as an Operator, according to recent leaks. Despite criticism being levied at the single-player campaign, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has been a hit with players across the world, with gamers spending more time in Modern Warfare 3 compared to the rest of the reboot trilogy.
To keep players engaged in the latest release and the free-to-play battle royale Warzone, Activision regularly hosts crossovers with characters from various franchises. In the latest Halloween event, a Diablo 4 themed crossover with Call of Duty: Warzone allowed players to claim an in-game weapon that could be used across both titles. Now it seems Activision is preparing to host the next franchise in the long-running franchise.
According to a post on Twitter by regular Call of Duty data miner ModenasHD, references to Rick Grimes and Michonne from The Walking Dead series have been found within the code of Modern Warfare 3. Although there is no official release date, it looks likely that the characters will be available as operators in early 2024 to tie into The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live TV show.
Although the news has yet to be confirmed, this isn’t the first time news of a Call of Duty crossover has leaked ahead of a full reveal. Earlier in the year fans found that another comic book property in the form of Spawn would be making an appearance during Season 5 of the shooter. This leak proved accurate, as Spawn was added to Modern Warfare 2 and Warzones as an operator in September 2023.
News of the potential crossover comes at a time when games in both franchises have been poorly received. Modern Warfare 3 launched to mixed reviews but has managed to get away unscathed compared to the latest Walking Dead offering. Fans have taken to social media to criticize The Walking Dead: Destinies in almost all aspects of the game, including the quality of the graphics and a rushed narrative.
The latest Zombie mode in Modern Warfare 3 is already proving popular among fans, and with a new Walking Dead spin-off releasing in February 2024, a crossover between the two properties does seem to make sense. It remains to be seen if Activision will introduce Rick and Michonne into Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, although with the TV series coming up in the next few months, fans won’t have long to wait for the official confirmation.
