Call of Duty might be about eternal warfare, but there's a battle behind the scenes across a shared community. For decades, Call of Duty fans have debated whether Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare series or Treyarch Studios' Black Ops series has the better Call of Duty titles, so we've decided to compare the two directly to see who comes out as the winner. There are so many factors involved when it comes to Modern Warfare vs. Black Ops, from the campaigns, sequels, multiplayer metas/maps, and even zombies! As such, both can be seen as absolute winners, but just for fun, why don't we see which game can offer players the most fun, replayability, and bang for their buck?

Modern Warfare vs. Black Ops is meant to be a fun discussion about the two Call of Duty series, and in no way to discredit the hard work of both talented development teams.

Call of Duty might just be the king of the FPS genre, but that doesn't mean there aren't impressive alternatives to check out.

The Campaign

Two Stories That Indulge in War on Very Different Fronts

The campaign might not be as popular as Multiplayer, but a good story is still integral to the whole Call of Duty experience. If the story is bland, it leaves a bad taste in players' mouths going forward, which is why Modern Warfare and Black Ops often offer riveting stories of war on different fronts, with themes and time periods that resonate. To start, we'll take a look at Modern Warfare. Modern Warfare focuses more on the action and the spectacle of warfare through global conflicts, while still tying the story together with narrative threads that make sense and a group of characters you can root for, and even mourn. Modern Warfare, and especially the rebooted series, focuses on realism and military drama, with an emphasis on remaining grounded and modern for realistic and feasible tales of war.

Then, there's Black Ops, a series that indulges in the complex rabbit holes of government programs like MK-Ultra to mind control soldiers and warp the minds of victims of war. Black Ops is far deeper and complex than Modern Warfare, and the stories from Black Ops, Black Ops 2, and Black Ops Cold War often provide incredible twists with a thriller tale rather than an action spectacle. Most of the campaigns are separated from one another to tell unique stories, and while recurring characters are present, it's mainly the themes and seeing how deep the rabbit hole goes that keeps players intrigued. However, the fact that Modern Warfare and Black Ops focus on so many different aspects while both remaining iconic makes it hard to pick a winner. For these reasons, it's best to tie this round, as both Modern Warfare and Black Ops excel in their own fields when it comes to their stories.

Legacy and Sequels

Narrative Cohesion and Impressive Gameplay are Important for a Stellar Legacy

Another important aspect when it comes to the different Call of Duty series is their legacy and how cohesive they are when it comes to telling a complete story. When looking at Modern Warfare, players have 3 games to look at, and they all tell the coherent story of Task Force 141 from start to finish, with iconic characters like John Price and Soap leading the charge across an epic trilogy. Even with the series' remake trilogy starting in 2019, there's cohesion. Progressing through a tale of impending World War 3 in the modern setting with Soap and Price at the helm is legendary, and each game is filled with epic action set pieces, tragedy, and raw victory to complement a trilogy that houses a proud legacy for its campaign.

Then, you take a look at Black Ops, which can be pretty confusing, to say the least. Black Ops Cold War (Black Ops 5) is a direct sequel to Black Ops 1, and so is Black Ops 6, but then Black Ops 7 is a direct sequel to Black Ops 2, and then somewhere there's Black Ops 4 that doesn't even have a story, and Black Ops 3, which seems entirely unrelated to all of them. Whereas Modern Warfare is a more coherent narrative that can be followed from start to finish, Black Ops seems like just a sub-title for Call of Duty entries with vague tie-ins, thus making the timeline of its campaign hard to follow, so it's easy to give this victory to Modern Warfare for fulfilling a complete narrative within 3 games.

Zombies

Round-Based Zombies Proves to Be a Central Pillar of Call of Duty

Before this debate even begins, the winner of Zombies belongs to Black Ops. Zombies is Treyarch's baby, and while Modern Warfare has only just dabbled its toes into Zombies with Modern Warfare 3 (2023), the mode was more or less an open-world PvE mode where players indulged in different objectives for loot, rather than the round-based mode that everyone adores. Each Black Ops game has continued to evolve the possibilities of the Zombies mode, and there's a dedicated community that buys Call of Duty for the Zombies and nothing else.

Black Ops has continued to impress with a stellar selection of round-based maps, riveting characters with deep intrigue into the lore, and, of course, a replayable mode that always has you coming back for more. Treyarch has made Zombies a staple of Call of Duty since World at War in 2008, and the hype surrounding each new release is as astronomical as the new multiplayer meta, thanks to its ravenous and loyal fanbase that loves completing main quest easter eggs, uncovering secrets of lore, and killing the undead in endless waves.

Multiplayer Maps

Engaging Maps That Follow Replayable Layouts Ensure Fun Engagement

One of the most important aspects of the Multiplayer for any Call of Duty is its selection of maps, and this is something that both COD s do well. Modern Warfare maps have an extremely nostalgic selection, with tiny maps like Rust making chaos absolutely fun to play. Then there are more complex, but equally fun maps like Scrapyard, Wasteland, Terminal, and Highrise, where players can focus on a multitude of different playstyles from camping, sniping, and run-and-gun. Modern Warfare maps often felt larger than Black Ops with more involved settings, but things took a bit of a nose-dive with the reboot games, where closing doors became a thing, making camping all the more prevalent, and the larger scale of these new maps just made battles exhausting.

When taking a look at Black Ops' selection of maps, they are far smaller and arcadey in feel, providing players with a typical 3-lane system that seems to follow most map designs as a blueprint for how to have fun. The Black Ops games have close-quarter and fast-paced maps, and due to the focus on lanes and tight corners, everyone can enjoy these maps in their own ways, from sniper campers to shotgun sprinters. Maps like Hijacked, Raid, and Nuketown put an emphasis on adrenaline-filled battles, whereas more tactical maps like Firing Range, Evac, and Summit have wider zones and advantageous spots to ensure more thought goes into control. Black Ops seems to have the more exciting and engaging selection of maps, so the winner for best Multiplayer maps goes to Black Ops.

Multiplayer Meta & Game-Feel

Gunplay, Movement, and General Fun Are Key Factors in Deciding the Winner

Call of Duty is often tied to innovation in the way its games feel. There's a reason that Call of Duty is at the top, and it's because the gameplay is both fun for veterans of the series and casuals, providing players with an enthralling meta for loadouts, while remaining fun to play with movement and shooting alike. With Modern Warfare, the gameplay seems more strict and realistic, with fast time-to-kill, slower movements, and turns outside of tactical sprint, and genuinely just more gritty and grounded. Combat remains fun, but it's far more rewarding for the casual player to engross in how the game feels and how they play.

For Black Ops, there's a far more arcadey approach to the movement. Things feel fast and zippy, and whether it's the jumping and drop-shotting of slower TTK weapons or the fact that you can use omnimovement to slide and dive around the map, there's a lot more spry legs in Black Ops than Modern Warfare. Black Ops also seems to innovate more with its gameplay through sliding, dolphin diving, omnimovement, and even jet boosters and wall riding across its titles, thus keeping the series fresh and on its toes for what comes next. This arcadey feel also invites a battle between casual and hardcore players, as some can adapt to the movement better than others, which in turn makes them superior at combat. For being more innovative and with more addictive gameplay, we'll give this victory to Black Ops.

The Winner: Black Ops

The Call of Duty Series That Offers the Most Across Campaign, Zombies, and Multiplayer

It's a close battle, but at the end of the day, only one can be crowned the winner. With all the factors in mind, and the core factor being that of fun, we decided that Black Ops holds strong as the best Call of Duty series. With its intriguing campaign storylines that delve deep into the grit of espionage and American politics, the immensely fun round-based Zombies mode of endless undead hordes, and an arcadey feel to a multiplayer meta, we couldn't see the winner as anything else. There is still so much to love about Modern Warfare and its dedication to realism and the modern setting, but the personality and charm of Black Ops is too good to deny, with something there for all fans to enjoy. Whether fans love Zombies, a deep campaign, or even endless hours fighting friends and foes in Multiplayer, there's just so much to love about Black Ops, as there is to love about Modern Warfare.
