Summary
- PlayStation 5 users will see a 100 GB decrease in Call of Duty file size with update 1.049.
- PlayStation 4 users will also benefit from a file size reduction, though not as significant.
- Despite temporary improvement, Call of Duty's file size may increase with new updates and content.
The official Call of Duty HQ app will see a drastic decrease in file size on the PlayStation 5 following the release of a new update. Call of Duty players who play on the PlayStation 4 will also see a significant reduction in overall file size, but not quite as hefty as those on the newer generation of console.
Call of Duty's gigantic file size has been a controversial topic for quite a few years now. While Activision has attempted to justify the massive file size for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and Warzone in the past, fans were shocked to find that the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 will have a whopping 300 GB storage requirement. Thankfully, Activision claims that this is not just the size of Black Ops 6, but rather the overall size of multiple Call of Duty titles in the Call of Duty HQ app.

Nine multiplayer maps set to be featured in the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 leak online.
As revealed by PlayStation Game Size on Twitter, a new update for the Call of Duty HQ app will see a massive file size reduction on the PlayStation 5. Once Activision releases update 01.049, PlayStation 5 users will see the overall install size of Call of Duty reduced by over 100 GB. Currently, the overall file size for the Call of Duty HQ app comes in at 174.951 GB on PlayStation 5, but once the upcoming update is released the file size will shrink to just 73.630 GB on the current gen console.
Activision Is Drastically Reducing Call of Duty's File Size
Update 1.049 doesn't have a confirmed release date just yet, but both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 users can look forward to a drastic reduction in file size. While the current-gen console will see over 100 GB of space return to their hard drives, PlayStation 4 users will also see the game's size reduced from 82.730 GB to 67.600 GB, freeing up a little over 15 GB of space. However, the file size on all platforms is likely to be increased once again later this month, as Activision gears up for the first Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 open beta.
The next entry in the Call of Duty series is still a few months away, but fans were recently given their best look yet as massive leaks for Black Ops 6 occurred over the weekend. From new multiplayer maps and UI changes to a brand-new Warzone map, the leaks revealed plenty of new information about Treyarch Studios' next Black Ops game.
Given the sheer amount of content that is released for Call of Duty with each new update, it's unlikely that the game's file size will remain under the 100 GB threshold, especially for those who want all aspects of the series installed, such as multiplayer, Warzone, Zombies, and the game's campaign. But the likely temporary drastic decrease in file size on the PlayStation 5 is certainly welcome.
