Online servers for Call of Duty: WW2 on PC are once again operational after some severe hacking issues forced Activision to take the 2017 shooter offline shortly after it joined Xbox Game Pass. Although Activision never explicitly stated that it was taking Call of Duty: WW2 offline to address the hacking issue, fans are hoping that its return to the Microsoft Store means it may now be safe to play. However, since there has been no confirmation on the matter yet, fans should exercise caution when playing online.
In the final days of June, Activision continued its trend of bringing older Call of Duty games to Xbox Game Pass with the addition of Call of Duty: WW2. Developed by Sledgehammer Games, WW2 was a return to form for the franchise after the controversial release of Infinite Warfare the year before. Although it might not be remembered as fondly as other entries in the series, fans were thrilled to jump back into the 2017 entry when it launched on Game Pass earlier this year. Unfortunately, issues with RCE hackers resulted in the title being pulled from the Microsoft Store shortly after its debut on the service.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7's Decision to Remove Carry Forward Gets a Mixed Response
Activision's decision to walk back its Carry Forward feature for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 appears to have drawn a mixed response from players.
Call of Duty: WW2 Servers Are Back Online
While those playing via Xbox One or Series X/S were safe, the PC version of Call of Duty: WW2 was riddled with hackers using RCE hacks to take control of players' PCs. Activision never publicly addressed the problem, but it did remove the title from the Microsoft Store and took its servers offline while it investigated reports of "an issue." Now, nearly two months later, the studio has confirmed that Call of Duty: WW2 is once again available via the Microsoft Store. However, as Activision hasn't detailed whether or not the RCE hacks have been rectified, fans looking to jump into the game's multiplayer on PC should likely do so with caution.
Call of Duty: WW2 is just one of the many classic entries in the series to join Game Pass following Microsoft's $69 billion acquisition of Activision-Blizzard in October 2023. The Call of Duty publisher is now under the Microsoft umbrella and has been working to bring many of its most beloved titles to Xbox's lucrative Game Pass service ever since. As of writing, WW2, Modern Warfare 2 (2022), Modern Warfare 3 (2023), and Black Ops 6, which was the first entry in the series to release day-one on the service, are all available on Xbox Game Pass. Numerous other Activision-owned titles, such as Crash Bandicoot, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, and Diablo, are also on the service.
The trend of bringing new Call of Duty titles to Microsoft's lucrative subscription service on day one seems to be continuing, as Activision has also confirmed that Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 will be on Game Pass at launch. The next entry in the franchise, which will be a direct sequel to 2012's Black Ops 2, will launch for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC on November 14.
