Call of Duty Zombies fans recently took a trip down memory lane, digging through old discussions about the game that started it all, Call of Duty: World at War. The legendary FPS from now-longtime Call of Duty developer Treyarch ushered in a new age for the series, placing players in the middle of World War 2. Along with multiplayer and campaign modes, Treyarch also included a secret Zombies mode in World at War that has since grown into a massive franchise.
While there's been a variety of changes and improvements made to the Call of Duty formula, each new release still feels connected to one another thanks to the series' satisfying combat, robust multiplayer features, action-packed story missions, and ever-increasing graphical fidelity. The franchise's Zombies mode has remained a cornerstone of the brand, even if it may not be as popular as Team Deathmatch. Over the last several years, Call of Duty Zombies has grown and evolved, much like the zombies themselves, becoming a story and feature-rich haven for those wanting to sit back and wipe out horde after endless horde. However, as the mode progresses, some players have grown fonder of the game that started everything, World at War.
Reddit user Moon_Devonshire went back to take a look at the old Call of Duty forums, specifically to see what players had said about the then-new Zombies mode. "It's kind of crazy seeing posts from 2008 when the discussion about zombies first started," the user noted. Several screenshots were shared of original discussions about the game's Zombies mode, with players posting their highest rounds. "For those who were around when it came out, were there any big theories by the time Der Riese came out? Or did a lot of that not start until bo1," one player asked. Strategies have changed significantly in Call of Duty Zombies, with players reaching absurdly high rounds.
Zombies Fans Look Back at World at War
It's common for players to feel nostalgic about the origins of their favorite game or series, with World at War acting as the launching point for the ever-expanding and ever-confusing Call of Duty Zombies storyline. However, players may also be fondly looking back due to controversy with Black Ops 6's take on Zombies. The reveal of Black Ops 6's second launch map, Liberty Falls, was met with both excitement and backlash, with some players feeling disappointed by the upcoming experience. While change is sometimes hard, there's always been controversy surrounding each new iteration of Zombies, notably with Black Ops 3's Shadows of Evil, a map that was criticized on launch but later considered to be one of the best of the series.
While World at War started it all, the Call of Duty Zombies saga continues with Black Ops 6, Treyarch's upcoming title. Releasing on October 25, 2024, Black Ops 6 seeks to reinvigorate Zombies in multiple ways, coming equipped with two brand-new round-based maps at launch. Treyarch showed off both of Black Ops 6's new Zombies maps over the last few weeks, giving players a small taste of what they can expect when the game fully releases, with plenty more updates and new experiences on the way as the next Call of Duty's lifecycle continues.
