Known as Rockman in Japan, the original Mega Man came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1987. The franchise's list of mainline games has significantly expanded over time, with the latest title, Mega Man 11, launching in 2018. Despite Mega Man being among Capcom's most in-demand franchises, the latest game in the series hasn't received a true follow-up. The company, however, has gone on record to explain that it is still planning to work on the beloved franchise.

During the question-and-answer portion of the 45th Ordinary General Meeting of Capcom Shareholders that took place on June 20, the Japanese video game giant said that it was considering how it could create games for the Mega Man series on a more regular basis. Capcom said in a previous meeting with investors that it would carefully consider how to approach future Mega Man games.

How Many Units Has The Mega Man Franchise Sold?

  • 41 million

Capcom, which was asked to divulge its plans for the franchise at the most recent forum, also described Mega Man as one of its most highly-valued properties. A 2023 financial report noted that the Mega Man franchise had sold around 41 million copies. In comparison, fellow Capcom property Resident Evil has shipped 154 million units, while Monster Hunter has sold more than 100 million copies, according to more recent reports.

At the recent shareholders meeting, Capcom revealed that sales for older titles in its catalog like Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and the always replayable Monster Hunter: World, released in 2017 and 2018, respectively, continue to grow thanks to the industry's shift to digital sales. Previously, games were only placed on store shelves for around six months, but companies can now sell online directly and devise more efficient pricing strategies for past titles, Capcom explained.

The newest Mega Man release is Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection, a compilation of the six main games in the Mega Man Battle Network spin-off series of RPGs that came out in April 2023. Capcom also released a mobile game titled Mega Man X DIVE in 2020, but global service for the experience is scheduled to end on July 30. An offline version of Mega Man X DIVE with additional content was ported to Steam and mobile devices last September.

The long-running series features a wide array of well-known characters and villains like Zero, Dr. Wright, Roll, Vile, Bass, Metal Man, and more. Players make their way through special themed levels and defeat the Robot Masters there in order to obtain their weapons, which can be used against other enemies.
