Beloved game developer Hideki Kamiya has revealed that he is still personally very interested in leading development of potential sequels to Viewtiful Joe and Okami. Throughout his three decades in the gaming industry, Kamiya has become one of gaming's most prolific faces and has worked on a plethora of iconic and memorable games. Kamiya spent more than ten years with Capcom in the late 1990s and early 2000s, and later went on to co-found Bayonetta developer Platinum Games in 2006. Now, Kamiya wants to return to two of his cult classic games.

During his time with Capcom and later Clover Studio, Hideki Kamiya helped to create two of the most beloved series of the 2000s. Viewtiful Joe, a side-scrolling beat-em-up inspired by superheroes and Japanese "tokusatsu" shows, would become a cult hit with both the original game and later its sequel in Viewtiful Joe 2. Okami debuted as an action-adventure game based around Japanese folklore, earning several accolades and later seeing a Wii port and an HD remaster on modern consoles. Kamiya is now pushing his interest in developing new entries straight to Capcom.

Hideki Kamiya Wants to Make Okami 2, Viewtiful Joe 3

As reported by NintendoLife, Hideki Kamiya shared his interest in new Viewtiful Joe and Okami games during a recent interview with "UNSEEN." Kamiya confirmed that he had written in a request for a new Viewtiful Joe game in a recent Capcom survey, stating to Capcom directly that he wants to direct a new Viewtiful Joe. Kamiya touched on the future of Okami during the interview as well, expressing his desire to finish the incomplete story of the Okami franchise. He also felt that Viewtiful Joe's lack of popularity led to Capcom dismissing the idea of a third game.

The interview with Kamiya and artist Ikumi Nakamura is far from the first time that Hideki Kamiya has talked about creating a new Viewtiful Joe or Okami. Earlier this year, Kamiya touched on his desire to develop a remake of the original Viewtiful Joe through his YouTube channel, particularly using Capcom's RE engine. Kamiya has also previously discussed wanting to make a new Okami in the past, feeling that mechanics like the Celestial Brush could be expanded upon in a new game.

While a new Viewtiful Joe or Okami may only be a dream for Kamiya at the moment, the prolific developer recently made a major change. Kamiya announced late last year that he would be leaving Platinum Games, more than 15 years after he helped to co-found the studio. Kamiya claimed that the main reason for his departure came from a difference in direction with the studio, stating that he views games more as "works of art." Hideki Kamiya will look to continue building his legacy elsewhere, whether through a new Viewtiful Joe or Okami or a project of his own.
