Summary

  • Captain America: Brave New World opened strong with $100 million but declined steeply in its second weekend.
  • The film grossed $414 million globally but fell short of expectations, affecting its box office campaign.
  • Despite being the fourth highest-grossing film of the year, it might not make the top ten list due to upcoming releases.

Captain America: Brave New World is a little over nine weeks old in cinemas and is only managing to reach a threshold many thought it would have reached earlier.

Captain America: Brave New World actually managed to open on the higher end of estimates with an impressive $100 million domestic four-day haul. After posting a steep -68% drop in its second weekend however, the commercial outlook of Anthony Mackie’s big-screen debut as Captain America looked grimmer and grimmer. While some rate it as an “okay” or mediocre film at best, others think otherwise and rate it as poor. That Captain America: Brave New World sports the third-lowest Rotten Tomatoes score for an MCU movie, just behind Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Eternals, is enough proof that, at best, it’s the worst Captain America film.

It’s Over For Captain America: Brave New World’s Box Office Campaign

$414 Million Is All It Would End Up With

Per Box Office Mojo and industry analyst, Luiz Fernando on X, Captain America: Brave New World grossed $38,000 on its ninth Wednesday (a -71.2 % drop from the previous week), pushing it past the $200 million mark at the U.S. Box office and becoming the second movie of the year to do so. This brings the film’s global total to $414 million ($214 million overseas) as of this writing.

Captain America: Brave New World’s steep drop, while commonplace ninth-week numbers, was not helped by its digital-wide release on April 15. Audiences who were late to the Anthony Mackie and friends' party may now relax at home and buy or rent it on Prime Video and Apple TV in 4K Ultra HD at prices starting from $24.99. Thus, the film’s current domestic theater tally of 440, down from 1,750 a week ago, might take an even bigger hit in the coming days. Not that it would matter — this is the end of the line at the box office for dear old Cap.

Captain America: Brave New World is now digitally available on Apple TV and Prime Video. Fans would get the chance to stream on Disney+ sometime in May or June.

Most studios would rejoice at a tentpole hitting $200 million in the domestic market, but certainly not Kevin Feige’s Marvel Studios with Captain America: Brave New World and its $180 million production budget. And worse, nine weeks (62 days) is quite a long journey to $200 million for any major blockbuster, talk more of an MCU one. For reference, while the first Captain America movie, Captain America: The First Avenger, maxed out at $176 million domestically, it took seventeen days for Captain America: The Winter Soldier to hit $200 million — eventually finishing at $260 million — and Captain America: Civil War a mere five days.

Captain America: Brave New World may currently be the fourth highest-grossing movie of the year after Ne Zha 2 ($2.15 billion), A Minecraft Movie ($550 million) and Detective Chinatown 1990 ($497 million), but with the anticipated arrival of heavyweights such as Fantastic Four: First Steps, Superman and Avatar: Fire and Ash, Anthony Mackie’s movie risks becoming the first Captain America film since 2011 to not finish in the top ten highest-grossing movies of the year.
