While Cassette Beasts does support couch co-op, the feature is not available immediately upon starting the game. Fortunately, players need only to make minimal progress in order to unlock co-op, and it is very easy to use once it becomes available. This guide is here to provide details on how all of this works, and it will help players start enjoying Cassette Beasts with their friends.
Cassette Beasts: Co-Op Explained
Before a player can play Cassette Beasts with a friend, they must advance to the point in this monster collecting game at which they earn their first companion. This is a requirement because the game's co-op feature centers around one player taking control of the custom character and the other taking control of the companion, and that is obviously impossible before a companion has been secured.
With respect to how a first companion is earned, players that have just started the game should begin by heading slightly northwest. Here, JRPG fans will encounter Kayleigh, who will provide a starter monster and lead them into the nearby Harbourtown. After that has occurred, players should simply exit Harbourtown, visit the gate to the east, and speak with Kayleigh once again to make her a companion and unlock Cassette Beasts' co-op mechanic.
After unlocking co-op, players should access the menu and direct their attention to the top-left corner. The words "Local Multiplayer Drop In / Out" can be found in that position, and fans should press the associated inputs to open the multiplayer menu. In this new menu, players should assign input devices to both the customized character and the companion and then press the Continue input that is indicated in the bottom-right corner to start the multiplayer session.
To note, while Cassette Beasts does not have native support for online multiplayer, Steam's Remote Play Together feature makes it possible to co-op with friends from afar. Players that are interested in trying this out should begin by launching Cassette Beasts and pressing Shift+Tab to open the in-game overlay. Fans should then simply right-click on their friend's name and select "Remote Play Together" to issue an invitation.
Alternatively, fans can use third-party applications like Parsec to play with friends in other locations. While this may be slightly more difficult to set up than Steam's Remote Play Together, it is an option for players that are enjoying Cassette Beasts on PC Game Pass to consider.
Cassette Beasts is available now on PC.
