The acclaimed indie game Castle Crashers has received a surprise DLC announcement, almost 16 years after the game was first released. Although the game has been ported to several platforms over the years, the new DLC will only be available on PC.
Although Castle Crashers was released back in 2008, studio The Behemoth has done a great job of supporting the game over the years. In 2015, a remastered version of the game was released, giving it a fresh coat of paint, and Castle Crashers Remastered even received a Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 release in 2019. When it comes to DLC, the last main release was a crossover with The Behemoth's BattleBlock Theater in 2013, meaning it has been over a decade since new content was added to Castle Crashers.

When fighting your way through Castle Crashers, these weapons are the best tools to have in your arsenal.
In a surprise trailer dropped online, developer The Behemoth confirmed that a new Castle Crashers DLC titled "Painter Boss Paradise" is in the works, although no release date is currently confirmed. The DLC brings a ton of content, including extensive Steam Workshop integration. Through this, players will be able to create their own Castle Crashers characters, which the game will bring to life. The trailer claims that it "animates on its own like magic," so players will be able to bring their wildest ideas to life in full confidence that it will work in-game. Through the Steam Workshop, players will then be able to share these designs online, as well as download them from others.
Castle Crashers Announces Painter Boss Paradise DLC
However, that's not all. Despite the release of Castle Crashers Remastered years ago, the new DLC is adding new player and weapon artwork for all characters, including enemies. This will bring another fresh look to Castle Crashers, making it look better than ever. On top of all of this, there's a new playable character called Paint Junior, with whom players can "create powerful art to vanquish your foes." All of these additions will be playable in the main Castle Crashers campaign, with no new levels being added in the Painter Boss Paradise DLC.
Although Castle Crashers continues to receive new DLC to this day, it's a surprise that The Behemoth hasn't pursued a sequel yet. The original game is considered one of the best indie games of all time, and has been massively successful over the years. There's certainly an audience that would still be interested in seeing the return of Castle Crashers, so hopefully this is something the developer eventually pursues.
