Summary

  • Xbox Live Arcade was a hub for Indie games, with Castle Crashers standing out as one of the best.
  • Castle Crashers is getting a new DLC, Painter Boss Paradise, with a new playable character and artwork.
  • The DLC also brings Steam Workshop support, hinting at the possibility of a Castle Crashers sequel.

The early days of Xbox Live Arcade delivered some of the most well-regarded Indie games in history. A digital storefront that launched in 2004, Xbox Live Arcade became a hub for smaller, independent video game projects when that wasn't a staple of the industry. While not every game on Xbox Live Arcade was an Indie darling, a good few were, and Castle Crashers is one of them.

Originally released onto Xbox Live Arcade in 2008, Castle Crashers is a 2D side-scrolling beat-em-up that boasts a vibrant art style and a boatload of charm. Castle Crashers was eventually ported to the PS3 and Steam in subsequent years, where its legacy as an Indie all-time great was further cemented. 16 years after its initial launch, and five years since even its last port, developer The Behemoth has announced that Castle Crashers is getting a new DLC, and while it's certainly a surprise, it's a very welcome one.

Castle Crashers' Painter Boss Paradise DLC Explained

Castle Crashers' Painter Boss Paradise DLC Will Add a New Playable Character and Artwork to the Game

Announced just a week ago, Castle Crashers: Painter Boss Paradise is a DLC set to hit the decade-old game sometime soon, though The Behemoth hasn't announced an official release date just yet. One of the biggest additions coming with this paid DLC is some new artwork. Castle Crashers' player-characters, enemies, and weapons will all receive a visual overhaul with this Painter Boss Paradise DLC, tweaking some characters' proportions and facial expressions, and giving everything a bit of a brighter redesign. For those who prefer Castle Crashers' original art style, these visual changes can be toggled on or off.

Castle Crashers' Painter Boss Paradise DLC is also adding a new playable character to the mix. Named Paint Junior, this new Castle Crashers playable character seemingly wields a large pencil and can apparently "vanquish enemies with the very power of their imagination," according to the trailer's vibrant voiceover.

Castle Crashers' Painter Boss Paradise DLC Is Bringing Steam Workshop Support

The other big addition coming with Castle Crashers: Painter Boss Paradise is Steam Workshop support. With the release of the DLC, players will be able to create their own Castle Crashers playable character. Players will be able to use a template designed by Behemoth to draw their character to the game's specifications, and then load that character into the game and customize their magic. Players can then upload that custom character to Steam Workshop, where others can easily download them into their own game.

Castle Crashers' Painter Boss Paradise DLC is only coming to Steam, and it will be a paid DLC, though Behemoth hasn't confirmed its final price tag.

While the gaming industry isn't without its strange occurrences, Castle Crashers getting DLC 16 years after its initial release is pretty bizarre. Naturally, some fans have taken this DLC announcement as a tease that a Castle Crashers sequel could finally be on the cards, and that might not be just wishful thinking at this point. Since BattleBlock Theater's release in 2013, The Behemoth has primarily spent its time remastering and porting Castle Crashers and Alien Hominid. It's about time The Behemoth released a new game, and a Castle Crashers sequel would make a lot of fans happy.
