The beloved actress, comedian, and screenwriter Catherine O'hara, famous for her roles in Home Alone and Schitt's Creek has passed away at the age of 71. TMZ was the first to break the news and fans have flooded onto social media to share their condolences and their grief surrounding the actress' death.
O'hara had an incredibly iconic career, starting from the stage in her home and birthplace of Toronto, Canada, where she met Eugene and Dan Levy who she would consider lifelong friends, and eventually transitioning to the screen.
The actress began her television career with her theater production SCTV, which became a very well-known comedy show. The show would help win her first Emmy and firmly establish her comedy chops. Then she would make her way to film, landing many iconic pre-early 2000s roles, like Delia Deetz in Beetlejuice.
Her most famous film role is undoubtedly Kate McCallister in the 1990s classic Home Alone. She would go on to reprise her role in the film's sequel and touch the hearts of families everywhere. In fact, fans used to stop O'Hara in the street, just to have her scream at them. Although Catherine was already a household name by this point, the film cemented her legacy with the next generation.
The actress would have several more minor roles before turning to television once again. She was also a prominent voice actress, landing roles in Frankenweenie, The Wild Robot, Over the Hedge, and Elemental.
In 2015, Catherine would reunite with Dan Levy on the set of Schitt's Creek, where she quickly became a fan-favorite. Moira's enthusiastic delivery and out-of-this-world fashion sense made her stand out amongst other members of the cast. The actress would once again win an Emmy for her performance as Moria Rose in 2020. She has had several minor roles since, but will always be remembered for her two most iconic characters.
Catherine O'Hara is survived by her husband, Bo Welch, who she met on the set of Beetlejuice, and their two sons, Matthew and Luke.
Rest in peace, Catherine O'Hara.
